Dictionary Skills Second Grade

Dictionary (dik-shuh-ner-ee) People use a dictionary to find out: -what words mean -how to spell words -how to say words -how to use words in a sentence Dik-shuh-ner-ee this is the pronunciation for the word dictionary. Four of the reasons we use a dictionary are: 1) to find out what words mean, 2) how to spell words, 3) how to say words, 4) how to use words in a sentence

Main Entry Words These words we are looking up are called main entry words. Entry words in the dictionary are listed in alphabetical order from A to Z. Main entry words or entry words. We call these entries.

About the Dictionary Arrange these entry words in alphabetical order: cat elephant ant dog beaver giraffe 1. ant 2. beaver 3. cat 4. dog 5. elephant 6. giraffe Alphabetical order means ABC order. 1. ant 2. beaver 3. cat 4. dog 5. elephant 6. giraffe Why was this so easy? Because all of the words start with a different letter so we don’t have to look past the first letter.

About the Dictionary Guide words at the top of the page make it easy to find the words you are looking for in the dictionary. Guide words show the first word and the last word on a page. man marble Which of these words are on this page? maple make manners Here are 2 guide words : man and marble. Using Your Dictionary There are several helpful things in this dictionary such as pictures, alphabet bars, labels, and captions. The guide words you can see at the top. The alphabet bar has the letter that represents that section of the dictionary. This page has words on it that begin with a b. This can be very helpful as you flip through your dictionary looking for the page that has your word on it.

Look at the pictures that help make the meaning clearer. We’re going to look up a few words. Remember to use the alphabet bars first and then the guide words. If there are pictures or illustrations, they will help make the meaning clearer.
