Title: The Genre of this book is Historical Fiction. In this novel, the Watson family travels to Birmingham, Alabama while the civil rights movement is in full swing Examples: All Quite On the Western Front By: Enrich Maria Remarque A Tale of Two Cities By: Charles Dickens Outlander By: Diana Gabaldon Attribute: The setting of the story and objects show it is historical fiction. Attribute: The novel is historical because the places and some events are real. Attribute: This novel is fiction because the characters are not real people. You may use this slide as a template!

Attribute: The setting of the story and objects in the story show it is historical fiction. “ Dad went out to try and get the Brown Bomber started. That was what we called our car. It was a 1948 Plymouth that was dull brown and real big.” (6) “ until a week later when Dad brought home the TT AB-700 in the Brown Bomber.” (99) “ got the pants up and said ‘ A guy just came by and said somebody dropped a bomb on Joey’s church’” (183)

Attribute: The novel is historical because the places and some events are real. “ Momma was the only one who wasn’t born in Flint…. She always blamed him for bringing her all the way from Alabama to Michigan.” (2) “ ‘ Awww, Momma…’ and she kept her hands and most of all she kept on talking more and more southern-style” (166) “ like someone had set off a people magnet, it seemed like everyone in Birmingham was running down the street.” (184)

Attribute: This novel is fiction because the characters are not real people. “ ‘ Kids,’ Dad said, ‘ I almost wasn’t your fater. You guys came real close to having a clown for a daddy named Hambone Henderson…’” (3) “ Buphead came by to visit Byron. The three of us were in my and By’s bedroom.” (134) “ Grandma Sands called a couple of times and told them that the police thought two white men drove by in a car.” (191)

The Watsons Go to Birmingham was a good example of Historical Fiction. The Watsons go to Birmingham is a good example of Historical Fiction because it showed a real event in the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church on September 15 th,1963 but all of the main characters were fiction. Also it showed objects that really did excitest in the 1960’s. It showed what life was like during the Civil Right Movement without any of the real Historical Figures being mentioned.
