How to Prepare and Present a SM case Based on Fred David By VHS

How to prepare and present a case analysis What is a Strategic-Management case?  It describes an organization’s external and internal condition and raises issues concerning the firm’s mission, strategies, objectives and polices.  Includes all related management issues.  Contains facts and opinions, judgments.  Learning by doing

How to prepare and present a case analysis Guidelines for preparing Case Analysis  Practicality- make reasonable assumptions and make decisions  Justification – how you support your decisions  Realism – no recommendation is beyond an org’s means.  Specificity-no broad generalization –5W+ (what, why, when, how, where and who)  Originality- feasible alternatives (not necessary the same as the firm’s plan)  Contribute – Group exercise in class and real life. Be open- minded to other’s views. Contribute.

Cases prescribed are comprehensive. Not confined to concepts discussed in that session.

How to prepare and present a case analysis Case methods vs. lecture approach  Be prepared for a discussion along the lines of “What would you do, why would you do it, when would you do it, and how you do it?”  Answers to the questions: What are the firm’s most important external opportunities and threats? What are the organization’s major strengths and weakness? How would you describe the organization’s financial condition? What are the firm’s competitors, and what are the strategies? What objectives and strategies do you recommend for this organization? Explain your reasoning. How does what you recommend compare to what the company plans? How would the organization best implement what you recommend? What implementation problems do you envision? How could the firm avoid or solve those problems?

How to prepare and present a case analysis Cross-Examination  Take a stand to support your position with objective analyses and outside research  Avoid being a silent observer

How to prepare and present a case analysis Preparing a Written Case Analysis  The Executive Summary  The Comprehensive Written Analysis  Steps 1. Identify the firm’s existing vision, mission, objectives, and strategies. Are all elements covered? 2. Develop or improve vision and mission statements for the organization 3. Identify the organization’s external opportunities and threats 4. Construct a Competitive Profile Matrix (CPM) 5. Construct an External Factor Evaluation (EFE) Matrix 6. Identify the organization’s internal strengths and weakness

How to prepare and present a case analysis Steps 7. Construct an Internal Factor Evaluation (IFE) Matrix 8. Specify how your recommendation can be implemented and what results you can expect. 11. Recommend specific annual objectives and polices 12. Recommend procedures for strategy review and evaluation 13. Confine yourself to the time line of the case. After events may be useful for other studies.
