1.2 The Commutative and Identity Properties Objective (things to learn): How to use the commutative properties for addition and multiplication of whole numbers. Understanding the commutative property is easy!!!!!!!!! But, it only works with addition and Multiplication. It works like this 3+5=5+3 Only the order changes, but the answer is still the same, 8. 4(8)=8(4) Again, only the order changes, but the answer is still the same, 32. So, if you switch the order of any addition or multiplication problem, the answer is always the same. (Addition) (Multiplication)

1.2 The Commutative and Identity Properties Equivalent expressions are expressions that have the same answer when you replace a variable with a specific value. Example: 4+x and x+4 are equivalent expressions because when you substitute x with a specific value the answers are the same.

1.2 The Commutative and Identity Properties Example: identity Properties Very simply, the identity of addition is zero, and the identity of multiplication is one. Notice the identities give you back the number you started with.
