Run On Sentences

A run-on sentence is two or more sentences that are incorrectly written as one sentence. The length of the sentence has nothing to do with it being a run-on sentence. Run-on sentences may be more than one sentence written as one without end marks, OR a run-on may be more than one sentence joined with commas.

Run-on Examples The states didn’t agree on the amount of representatives the big states wanted more votes because they had more people.

Run-on Examples Thomas Jefferson was a very famous American he wrote the Declaration of Independence.

Run-on Examples The states had to agree on a compromise the agreement was called The Great Compromise.

2.  The second method for correcting run-on sentences is linking the sentences with a comma and a conjunction. (The seven coordinating conjunctions are easy to remember by using this mnemonic device: FANBOYS: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, and So.)

3.  The third method for correcting run-on sentences is joining the two short related sentences with a semicolon. Use a semicolon to join sentences when the ideas are closely connected and need no transition word to explain the connection between them. The semicolon, as used here, is similar to using a period. ;
