2 Run-ons Are not good Run-ons are basically when two or more sentences are put together incorrectly because it is missing a comma or has a comma in the wrong place.

3 Example: Wrong: Run-on I love pizza and he loves hamburgers. Right: Not a Run-on I love pizza, and he loves hamburders.

4 FANBOYS For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So Each of these words is used for many things, but one important use is to combine sentences. Only put a comma in front of the FANBOYS when used to combine full, complete sentences.

5 FANBOYS may start a sentence and it will still be considered a full sentence. They are used for emphasis. For example: So, I found a dollar bill. Yet, I’m still afraid of the dark. – But notice there is still a clear SUBJECT in the sentence.

6 The commas in this sentence is not needed: WHY? Wrong: I love running in the park, and eating ice cream with my family. Right: I love running in the park and eating ice cream with my family. I love running in the park, and I love eating ice cream with my family.

7 Fragment or not? Because I love chocolate. But, I love chocolate. Loves chocolate. He ran. He ran far away and into town.

8 Fragment or not? Because I love chocolate. – Fragment But, I love chocolate. – Sentence Loves chocolate. – Fragment He ran. – Sentence He ran far away and into town. – Sentence

9 Practice: Decide if there are problems with the following sentences and fix them. The little boy was lost and cried very loud. I lost my phone so I was late. He was my best friend yet he still lied to me. The dog was large and chased the children around the house. I bought a flower and she bought a dress at the shop. The house was large, and it was warm.
