Topics F eXtended Metadata Registry (XMDR) Project F XMDR Capabilities F Special edition of Journal F Description of prototype (Karlo Berket) F Demonstration of prototype - Thursday morning

eXtended Metadata Registry (XMDR) Project Participants F Collaborative, interagency effort u US Environmental Protection Agency u United States Geological Survey u National Cancer Institute u US Department of Defense u National Science Foundation u Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory u Mayo Clinic u Apelon u & others F Under umbrella of Ecoinformatics u Testbed project F Want to collaborate with Ecoterm participants u Content, ideas, testing F Want to collaborate with EC Framework Program 7 projects F See: xmdr.org

What Can XMDR Do? Support a new generation of semantic computing F Concept system management F Harmonizing and vetting concept systems F Linkage of concept systems to data F Interrelation of multiple concept systems F Grounding ontologies and RDF in agreed upon semantics F Reasoning across XMDR content (concept systems and metadata) F Provision of Semantic Services

XMDR Capabilitites F Register (and manage) semantic artifacts that are useful for data management, data administration, and data analysis. Extend contents to cover ever more challenging structures and expressivity. F Enable users to register interrelations between concept systems and other concept systems F Enable users to interrelate concept systems with data held in databases, terminologies, and metadata deriving from natural language text understanding systems F Enable use of new services for semantic computing: Semantics Service Oriented Architecture, Semantic Grids, semantics based workflows, Semantic Web …. F Enable registration of semantics with more formal techniques (in addition to natural language) -- First Order Logic (e.g., Common Logic), Description Logics (such as OWL-DL) F Encourage and enable the sharing of concept systems (e.g., through SKOS) and traditional metadata through means that reduce the cost of accessing, obtaining and interacting with the broadest range of content

F Managing, harmonizing, and vetting semantics -- essential to enable enterprise semantic computing F Managing, harmonizing and vetting semantics -- important for traditional data management. F Enabling “community intelligence” through efforts similar to Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Flickr XMDR Supports
