Why and what is External Quality Assessment ? Effective Quality Assurance (QA) programme requires a combination of; Internal Quality Control (IQC) the everyday analytical process External Quality Assessment (EQA) programmes where overall accuracy and comparability of results between centres may be determined

Assessment and performance

They could be returned more promptly Slides are late being returned It would be useful if the assessed slides were returned to coincide with the publication of the results so they can be reviewed by the consultant histopathologist as soon as possible Not enough time to return stained slides Longer turnaround time as often receive week before submission Turnaround times

Scheme role

At present we are too short of staff and time No funding available for travel and fees associated with workshops Pushing for the appropriate members' of staff to be allowed to attend Looking to send 2 people in the Autumn Already sent 2 staff

As a past assessor and highly experienced BMS the workshops do not add any further information I believe my knowledge is above average therefore is not applicable Too far to travel as all in the North! Probably only if they were in London

CPT educational courses for each module A basic course / workshop for our trainee to give him a better understanding I work in a very small lab and any workshop would be useful Continual refresher courses More specialist staining workshops to go alongside the Specialist Portfolio How stains are used in pathology diagnosis

Scheme Aims F it for purpose “ensure that the scheme provides a service that meets the agreed needs and requirements of the participants” Effective provide processes and achieve outcomes to support the scheme and its participants E quitable Unbiased, impartial, fair, reasonable, even handed E fficient avoid waste including ideas and energy T eamwork

Effective Enhanced Feedback

Effective Regular Meetings

Effective Education

Effective the next step…Website e-learning? On line quiz How to score slides and how to improve stains Common pitfalls with common stains Optimising staining techniques Staining and processing trouble shooting Microtomy improvement techniques

Assessment and performance

More up to date images good and bad, and details of best methods Question and answer section for staining issues Feedback about most commonly occurring reasons for marks to be deducted and advice about how they could be improved

Handy to have reminders about submission dates Often lower scores are given no indication of why H&E feedback on strength i.e. too strong / too weak rather than intensity Preferred scoring out of 10 See previous?!

Scheme role

Scoring Generally staff feel the scheme gave a better feedback when the mark was out of 10 rather than 5 Scoring out of 5 rather than 10 is sometimes misrepresenting the quality of our work Please, please, please reconsider the score out of 5, it is not as specific as the scores out of 10!

Scheme Aims F it for purpose “ensure that the scheme provides a service that meets the agreed needs and requirements of the participants” Effective provide processes and achieve outcomes to support the scheme and its participants Equitable Unbiased, impartial, fair, reasonable, even handed E fficient avoid waste including ideas and energy T eamwork

Equitable Gallery

Equitable Best methods

Equitable Comments… Would like all laboratory staff to be able to view best practices and view slides Data on stains, automation and best methods Details of stains suppliers with best methods Pictures of good stains, suggested stain protocols, troubleshooting ideas and forum for help with stain problems Best methods and troubleshooting. Also maybe open a forum for questions

Equitable Improved feedback

Equitable Improved scoring system

Participant Performance

Comments… Analyse own departments performance over time against a specific stain in a tabular format, i.e. could view all the recent PAS stain scores Good and poor scoring staining to see what contrast of work is being submitted Summary of anonymised participant scores to allow us to rank our own performance

Equitable Route cause analysis for poor performers Participant profiles

Scheme Aims F it for purpose “ensure that the scheme provides a service that meets the agreed needs and requirements of the participants” Effective provide processes and achieve outcomes to support the scheme and its participants E quitable E fficient avoid waste including ideas and energy T eamwork

Efficient Modernization Service improvement Advancing technology Changing and developing workforce

Efficient Digital imaging

Image availability Multiple viewing Continual assessment Teaching and training

Efficient Digital imaging No lost images Instant Reports Availability Less time wasted

Scheme Aims F it for purpose “ensure that the scheme provides a service that meets the agreed needs and requirements of the participants” Effective provide processes and achieve outcomes to support the scheme and its participants E quitable E fficient avoid waste including ideas and energy T eamwork

Teamwork Feedback Ability to send range of slides for assessment when trying to improve poor results Excellent feedback from the Scheme. Slides are sent out in a prompt manner When I phoned up the CPT staff were very helpful and kind Thanks for all your hard work

Teamwork Feedback – Wham bam! “ I have recently taken over the special stains section of my laboratory. There is a lot of work involved to update and improve the service we currently provide. I attended the CPT workshop last year, and met the Scheme Manager. I explained my situation and she could have not been anymore supportive. I really feel confident that I am fully supported by the UK NEQAS CPT scheme. For that I, and on behalf of my department, we are very grateful”
