Kagan Co-operative Learning Student active engagement through co-operative learning WHS INSET 10 th February 2012

It’s not rocket science! Lots of the ‘structures’ we already do It’s about structuring your classes so that more students are active and engaged at any given time… once it’s in place the students do the work! Why do it? Strong links to Differentiation & AFL Meta Analysis (2010) Co-operative learning v Traditional learning Worldwide studies Raise in student achievement 182 studies28% 414 studies23% 122 studies27%

Give it a go – Risk “Behold the turtle, he makes progress only when he sticks his neck out” (James B. Conant)

Take off – Touch Down Developing Trust Building Relationships Support Enthusiasm Linking the subject Standing MovingInteract

Class Building Task Mix – Pair - Share When the music begins WALK calmly around the class When it stops, you stop and pair up with the CLOSEST person to you Listen for my instruction – Once I’ve said the task you have 10 seconds to INTERACT and come up with an answer

Structuring the class to achieve every students potential – Mixed achievement level teams TEACHER High (1) Low Medium (3) High medium (2) Low (4)

Fun Non - Academic Inclusion (Easy questions) 2 Process 4 Find the fiction – Name 2 things that happened to you last weekend (1 True, 1 False) with your shoulder partner Round Robin – Name an animal beginning with the letter E with your team

Give it a go! Some will work better in practical or theory lessons Try 1 – in wont go perfect first time… evaluate it and try it again… Some you will not like, try another one! Once your students are familiar with the structure and understand the principle, the students do all the work. You can ensure ALL students are engaged and making progress…No ‘Hitchhiking’
