THE FIRST STUDENT WILL ASK IF YOU ARE READY, THEN THEY WILL PERFORM. EACH STUDENT HAS A TIMER-THEY WILL SHOW YOU THE TIME SET -10 MINUTES MOST EVENTS -7 MINUTES EXTEMP -5 MINUTES IMPROMPTU THEY WILL START THE TIMER AND PERFORM. WHEN THEY ARE DONE THEY WILL STOP THE TIMER, THEN SHOW YOU THE TIME. RECORD THE TIME ON THE BALLOT. SHOULD THE TIMER FAIL TO START, MALFUNCTION, BEEP, SHOW 0, PLEASE MAKE A NOTE ON THE BALLOT.

DO NOT LET THE TIME AFFECT YOUR DECISION—EVEN IF THE TIMER GOES OFF. IF THE TIMER GOES OFF, RECORD 00 ON THE BALLOT. USE THE GRID TO RATE EACH CONTESTANT

KEEP TRACK OF EACH PERFORMER-BY THE END OF THE ROUND YOU HAVE PLACING ORDER.

USE THE COMMENT SHEETS TO NOTE STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ADDRESS THE STUDENTS PERFORMANCE AND REASON FOR DECISION. YOU WILL HAVE TIME AFTER THE ROUND FOR EXTENSIVE COMMENTS. TO KEEP THE ROUNDS FLOWING MAKE NOTES AND ADD LATER. REMEMBER TO JUDGE THE PERFORMANCE, NOT THE PIECE. IF A PIECE IS PRESENTED WELL, BUT YOU DISAGREE WITH THE SPEAKER’S POINT OR THE TYPE OF HUMOR USED, REWARD THEM FOR PERFORMING.

YOU CAN WORK ON THE COMMENTS UNTIL THE NEXT ROUND. RETURN ASAP FINISH IN JUDGE’S ROOM

IN EXTEMP AND IMPROMPTU STUDENTS WILL ENTER ONE-BY-ONE TO SPEAK. IN PRELIM ROUNDS YOU WILL BE THE ONLY JUDGE. IN FINALS THERE WILL BE TWO OTHER JUDGES. (PLEASE DO NOT CONFER WITH THE OTHER TWO ON YOUR DECISION). YOU MAY JUDGE STUDENTS YOU KNOW-THAT’S ACCEPTABLE (PLEASE BE FAIR) IF A STUDENT IN YOUR ROUND IS RELATED TO YOU, PLEASE EXCUSE YOURSELF AND REPORT BACK TO THE JUDGE’S TABLE.
