Students travel to competitions in the area and participate in three rounds at each meet. In the round, they compete with 7 to 8 other students and then are ranked according to who has done the best in that round. Totals are added up and awards presented based on who performed the best in the day or perhaps in a final round of the best of the best. Students earn individual and team awards like ribbons, trophies, and pins. It is a Minnesota State High School League Activity.

6 What are our expectations? During the week: Coach Lyke
We expect speakers to find a 25 minute slot of time to practice with one of the coaches every week. (We started practices last week.) We have team meetings every Monday from 3:15 – 4:10. The categories also work shop or practice once a week on Mondays in the 3:15-4:10 time frame.

7 What are our expectations? For competitions? Coach Lyke
Most of the contests are on Saturdays, so speakers need to make some arrangements to be at the contests. We provide transportation. *The bus usually leaves at 7 a.m. from JM *Big 9 on March 21 – We are excused from 8th hour. It is at Mayo High School. *Section Meet on April 13 – We are competing at Northfield High School. *Timers! *After all, that’s how speakers earn individual points, gain experience and have all the fun. *Students will call with time we will be home.

8 What other rewards are there? Coach Nieland/Tom
Speech is a Minnesota State High School League sponsored event. Students who participate at the section contest can earn the opportunity to advance to the state contest. If a speaker places in the top 3 at section contest, that speaker moves on to the State meet, April 21, at Eagan High School. Students gain poise and confidence. It looks great on a college application or resume. Speech students go on to be leaders in industry, business, education, and politics. We have a lot of fun!
