Presentation transcript:

SL is on the way to becoming the world´s most sustainable public transport The Stockholm experiences from introducing and operation of public transport with sustainable fuels

County of Stockholm Population 1.9 million –1.6 % of Sweden’s total area –160 km from north to south Every fifth Swede lives here Cars per thousand inhabitants –Stockholm: 402 –Sweden: 459 Attractive public transportation –AB Storstockholms Lokaltrafik –Waxholmsbolaget AB

Stockholm Public Transport facts 40 % overall market share in Stockholm 75 % market share in peak hours Funding: 50 % taxes and 50 % fares passengers / day 2,5 million trips / day

Stockholm Public Transport We offer all citizens in the County of Stockholm an extensive, attractive and easily accessible public transport Customers satisfaction important Simple, reliable, environmentally good transports - at good prices Safe and secure We shall contribute to a fair and sustainable development of our region Limited company owned by the Stockholm County Council Public Transport Authority of the Stockholm region

A major part of SL vehicles are sustainably operated All track vehicles run on energy from wind, water and bio mass –Next step: less energy consumption Today approx. 30% of the buses run on renewables – % – % 75% of all traffic is today operated with renewable fuels

The SL philosophy Strategies to reach the goals Use the best available solutions of today Support and empower projects for future solutions. Hybrids, fuel cells etc

To be considered Political decisions and commitments Global climate changes Local emissions Security and supply Ethics, certificates etc Price Sustainable fuels – but which to chose?

Renewable fuel, great volume potential –All city buses operated with ethanol or biogas –Start 1989 –Now 420 buses Ethical? –Environmental and social aspects on the global level –50% surplus from Swedish paper pulp production –50% from Brazilian sugar cane SL has the worlds larest fleet of ethanol buses

…and one of Europe´s largest fleets of biogas buses A fuel for the future –Today 81 buses –Ca 500 buses within some years –Long-term cooperation with water suppliers and sewage plants (Stockholm Water, Stockholm Gas and the Käppala Sewage Corp) Ethical –100% biological –100% waste product –Locally produced

Future distribution network for biogas in the Stockholm region

Some results % increase of renewable fuels in the bus fleet Now 64 biogas buses and 424 ethanol buses Reduced consumption of diesel: 18 million litres/annum Reduced emissions of fossil CO 2 : kg/annum Reduced emission of CO 2 per passenger kilometre: 72,5 grams/pkm Reduced emissions of NOx and PM
