German Institute of Urban Affairs Difu – Sebastian BührmannTIDE Workshop Stuttgart Accident risks pedestrians and cyclists n Conflicts between cyclists and pedestrians of little significance in accident statistics. n Pedestrians involved in only around six per cent of all accidents in which cyclists were injured. n Around 15 per cent of accidents in which pedestrians were injured involved a cyclist. n In more than 60 per cent of accidents involving both groups, the cyclist is the main cause. Mainly collisions caused by cycling at inappropriate speeds and abrupt changes in direction. n Normally, severity of the accidents is low n Pedestrians clearly bear the risk of being hurt in an accident. n Besides that – numerous conflicts without injuries as common sources of anger and hostile environment between cyclists and pedestrians
