شورون تگزاکو ChevronTexaco زنجیرۀ تأمین خود را به وسیله فناوری اطلاعات، مدرن ساخت کار اصلی شرکت، حفاری، تصفیه، حمل و نقل و فروش بنزین و نفت. با دو مسألۀ اصلی مواجه بود : اتمام بنزین در پمپ ها و لغو ارسال محموله به دلیل پربودن منبع پمپ بنزین. کمبودها و باقی مانده ها به عنوان « شیاطین دو قلو ». مشکل در ایجاد هماهنگی بین سه بخش زنجیرۀ تأمین است : استخراج نفت، پالایش و پخش آن.

راه حل شرکت تصمیم گرفت مدل کسب و کار خود را از عرضه محور به تقاضا محور تغییر دهد. یعنی، به جای تمرکز بر میزان نفت فرآوری و عرضه شده به مشتریان، شرکت شروع به تفکر درباره میزان نیاز مشتریان به نفت ( بنزین ) و سپس چگونگی برآورده ساختن آن کرد. لازمۀ این تغییر، تحول عمده ای در کسب و کار و پشتیبانی گسترده فناوری اطلاعات از آن بود.

نحوۀ عملکرد : در مخازن موجود در جایگاه های عرضه سوخت، یک کنترلگر الکترونیکی نصب کرد. این کنترلگر، اطلاعات دقیق و به هنگامی را در مورد سطح نفت از طریق یک کابل به سیستم مدیریت مبتنی بر فناوری اطلاعات جایگاه منتقل می کند. سپس این سیستم، اطلاعات را از طریق یک ماهواره به سیستم موجودی در دفتر مرکزی شرکت ارسال می نماید. در آنجا، یک سیستم برنامه ریزی مبتنی بر DSS پیشرفته، داده ها را جهت کمک به تصمیم گیری های پالایش، بازاریابی و تدارکات، پردازش می کند. این ِِ DSS شامل اطلاعات جمع آوری شده از شرکت های حمل و نقل زمینی و هوایی که مشتریان اصلی هستند نیز می باشد. این شرکت با استفاده از ERP و سیستم برنامه ریزی کسب و کار، میزان نفتی که باید پالایش شود، میزان خرید از بازار آزاد و زمان حمل و نقل محصولات به هر پمپ بنزین را تعیین می کند.

آخرین پروژه های فناوری اطلاعات شرکت، از زنجیرۀ تأمین پشتیبانی کرده و آن را در سطح جهانی گسترش می دهند. این پروژه ها عبارتند از : - پروژه NetReady که عملیات 150 پروژه کسب و کار الکتریکی را ممکن ساخته است. - پروژه Global Information Link(GIL2) که اتصال در سرتاسر شرکت را فراهم می کند. پروژه E-Guest که امکان اشتراک اطلاعات با شرکای تجاری را برقرار می سازد و یک سیستم اطلاعات منابع انسانی در سطح جهان است.

Chapter 79 Supply Chain Supply Chain Flows – Materials flows are all physical products, new materials, and supplies that flow along the chain. – Information flows relates to all data associated with demand, shipments, orders, returns and schedules. – Financial flows include all transfers of money, payments, credit card information, payment schedules, e-payments and credit-related data. Supply chain refers to the flow of materials, information, payments, and services from raw material suppliers, through factories and warehouses (Value Chain), to the final consumer (Demand Chain). Chapter 711 Supply Chains Components The supply chain involves three segments: – Upstream – Upstream, where sourcing or procurement from external suppliers occur – Internal – Internal, where packaging, assembly, or manufacturing take place – Downstream – Downstream, where distribution or dispersal take place, frequently by external distributors. It also includes the movement of information and money and the procedures that support the movement of a product or a service. Organizations and individuals are also part of the chain.

Chapter 713 Adding value along the chain is essential for competitiveness, however problems exist especially in complex or long chains and in cases where many business partners are involved. These problems are due to uncertainties and the need to coordinate several activities, internal units, and business partners. Chapter 714 The bullwhip effect refers to erratic shifts in orders up and down the supply chain because of poor demand forecasting, price fluctuation, order batching, and rationing within the chain. Distorted information can lead to tremendous inefficiencies, excessive inventories, poor customer service, lost revenues, ineffective shipments, and missed production schedules. Supply Chain Problems continued A common way to solve the bullwhip problem is by sharing information along the supply chain through EDI, extranets, and groupware technologies. For example employing a vendor- managed inventory (VMI) strategy, the vendor monitors inventory levels and when it falls below the threshold for each product this automatically triggers an immediate shipment.
