doc.: IEEE m TG4m - TVWS January 2013 Phil Beecher, (Wi-SUN Alliance) Wi-SUN Alliance Overview A Global Alliance Initially Japan focused, Wi-SUN Alliance is expanding globally (US, South east Asia, India) Main Objectives Define profiles for application solutions based on IEEE g-2012 standards, IEEE /2012 Define multi-vendor Interoperability test methodology and test plans for implemented feature test criteria. Create a test program to establish Test Tool and Interoperability testing criteria as well as publish the Test Plan documentation. Marketing Research Market Awareness Plan Contribute to other standardization and certification bodies and mutual collaboration. Slide 2

doc.: IEEE m TG4m - TVWS January 2013 Phil Beecher, (Wi-SUN Alliance) The Applications There are a wide range of requirements for different Smart Utility Applications, e.g. : Gas Metering Demand/Response Distribution Automation Machine to Machine (M2M) These applications lead to a variety of communication requirements g PHY implementations and appropriate upper layers can support these application needs Slide 3

doc.: IEEE m TG4m - TVWS January 2013 Phil Beecher, (Wi-SUN Alliance) Need for Wi-SUN Alliance IEEE g PHY amendment which specifically addresses wireless Smart Utility Networks was approved by IEEE SA Standards Board on March 29, 2012 Significant interest from product developers and RF IC manufacturers Industry recognition of benefits of interoperable products Prior to the formation of Wi-SUN Alliance, there was no organization specifically focused on Wireless Smart Utility Networks It is necessary to specify the communications functionality needed for each Smart Utility Application IEEE 802 defines standards, it does not define a certification process or test plans Slide 4

doc.: IEEE m TG4m - TVWS January 2013 Phil Beecher, (Wi-SUN Alliance) Purpose of Alliance (1) In the initial phase, the Wi-SUN Alliance is focusing its activities on the deployment of wireless Smart Utility Networks. Promote adoption of open industry standards as defined by international and regional standards development organizations (SDOs) Support the speedy implementation of wireless Smart Grid and Smart Utility Networks. The establishment of Compliance and Interoperability Certification programs Slide 5

doc.: IEEE m TG4m - TVWS January 2013 Phil Beecher, (Wi-SUN Alliance) Purpose of Alliance (2) Bring about the existence of a broad range of interoperable consumer and industrial Smart Utility devices by promoting open industry specifications for unlicensed and licensed control devices and peripherals Participate actively in relevant regional and international standards development organizations Slide 6

doc.: IEEE m TG4m - TVWS January 2013 Phil Beecher, (Wi-SUN Alliance) Membership Categories Wi-SUN Alliance has a four-tier membership program: Promoters: Contribute to the development of specifications, have access to general working group sessions and a seat on the Board of Directors Contributors: Contribute to the development of specifications, have access to general working group sessions. Observers: Have access to general working group sessions and specifications under development. Adopters: Have access to the final approved version of specifications and the opportunity to certify product and and the right to use the Wi-SUN Certification logo Slide 7

doc.: IEEE m TG4m - TVWS January 2013 Phil Beecher, (Wi-SUN Alliance) Wi-SUN Certification Scope Primarily Wi-SUN develops specification of Physical Layer (PHY) and Medium Access Control (MAC) layers, Authentication and Certification and IoT procedures and provide the PHY and MAC specification as “profile” Wi-SUN Physical layer specifications is based on IEEE g but the specification will be categorized based on use cases The MAC layer may have several different criteria depending on the application (Smart Meter, Home Automation... ) and its standards. The MAC may be based on or not be based on Physical Radio (PHY) Medium Access (MAC) Application Wi-SUN Compliant Platform Wi-SUN NETWORK (if needed) IEEE g based PHY MAC1 ( ) MAC1 ( ) MAC2 (non ) MAC2 (non ) PHY1 (for IP) PHY1 (for IP) PHY2 (for longer range) PHY2 (for longer range) Wi-SUN PHY profile Wi-SUN MAC profile Slide 9
