CHANGES TO OHIO’S GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

NEW GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS HOUSE BILL 487 CLASS OF 2017 (10TH-GRADERS IN THE SCHOOL YEAR) WILL BE THE LAST STUDENTS TO TAKE THE CURRENT OGT THE NEW REQUIREMENTS TAKE EFFECT WITH THE CLASS OF 2018 (NINTH GRADERS IN FALL 2014)

UNCHANGED—REQUIRED COURSES Course Requirements English Language Arts4 credits Math4 credits Science3 credits Social Studies3 credits Electives5 credits Fine Arts2 semesters (1 credit) Economics/Financial Literacy1 credit Phys Ed.5 credit Health.5 credit

NEW: 3 PATHS TO GRADUATION EARN A CUMULATIVE PASSING SCORE ON THE 7 EOC EXAMS (SET BY THE STATE) A “REMEDIATION-FREE” SCORE ON A NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAM (ACT?). OHIO WILL PAY FOR ALL JUNIORS TO TAKE THE ACT. EARN A STATE-ISSUED LICENSE TO PRACTICE A CAREER, EARNING A SCORE SET BY THE STATE THAT PROVES WORKFORCE READINESS. (NOT NAMED)

PATH 1: 7 END OF COURSE EXAMS (EOC) ALL STUDENTS TAKE END OF COURSE EXAMS: INTEGRATED MATH I (9 TH ) ENGLISH I (9 TH ) PHYSICAL SCIENCE (9 TH ) INTEGRATED MATH II (10 TH GRADE) ENGLISH II (10 TH GRADE) AMERICAN HISTORY (10 TH GRADE) AMERICAN GOVERNMENT (12 TH GRADE) OPTION: CLASSES MAY CHOOSE TO REPLACE THEIR CURRICULAR FINALS WITH THE STATE EOCS AND INCLUDE THESE SCORES AS PART OF THE CLASS GRADE

EOC SCORING CAN EARN FROM 1-5 POINTS ON EACH EXAM 5—ADVANCED 4—ACCELERATED 3—PROFICIENT 2—BASIC 1—LIMITED STUDENTS WHO TOOK CLASSES BEFORE THE CHANGES (JULY ) WILL AUTOMATICALLY RECEIVE A SCORE OF 3 IN EACH SUBJECT STUDENTS TAKING THESE COURSES THIS YEAR FOR HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT WILL TAKE THE EOC

EOC POINTS STATE BOE HAS NOT YET DETERMINED HOW MANY POINTS ARE REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION (18 IS BEING PROPOSED) MUST HAVE AT LEAST A COMBINED 4 POINTS IN ELA (ENG I AND ENG II) MUST HAVE AT LEAST A COMBINCED 4 POINTS IN MATH (INTEGRATED MATH I AND INTEGRATED MATH II) MUST HAVE AT LEAST A COMBINCED 6 POINTS IN SS AND SCIENCE (PHYSICAL SCIENCE, AMERICAN HISTORY, GOVERNMENT)

PATHS 2 AND 3: COLLEGE ADMISSIONS AND CAREER TESTS LITTLE HAS BEEN RELEASED

WHAT’S NEXT FROM THE STATE? FINALIZING THE EOC POINT SYSTEM INTEGRATING SUBSTITUTE EXAMS IN PLACE OF EOCS FOR AP AND DUAL ENROLLMENT CHOOSE COLLEGE PLACEMENT EXAMS (PATH 2) AND JOB SKILLS EXAMS (PATH 3) FIND OUT HOW THE REQUIREMENTS WILL WORK TO HELP WITH DROP-OUT PREVENTION
