T-3 Advanced Science Initiative: A Systematic Review of Participation Literature Tom Seekins and Will Shunkamolah RTC: Rural - University of Montana MICL Advisory Panel Meeting Dec. 11, 2008

The GOAL of the project is to conduct a systematic review of the literature on participation in community life. Objectives include: Establish an analytic framework to guide the review. Develop key questions, inclusion and exclusion criteria, search terms, and data extraction procedures. Conduct literature search and cull articles meeting inclusion criteria. Update research team on findings. Apply extraction protocol to included articles. Summarize findings for use in organizing SOS conference. Submit manuscript for publication.

Progress to Date Developed a small advisory panel for the project including Jean Ann Summers and Amanda Reichard. Recruited a graduate student to work on the project, William Shunkamolah. Identified 9 conceptual models addressing participation. Derived 32 key terms from models. Selected as the date parameters. Opened the inclusion criteria to any journal article - not necessarily peer reviewed - under the assumption that there would not be many. Data bases to focus on psychology and social sciences.

Progress to Date - 2 Conducted a pilot scan of search terms and several literature data bases. The largest number of hits was 45,776. The key terms of disability and participation produced 1,309 hits in a combination of social science sources and 724 in Psychinfo alone. Reviewed date parameters with advisory panel and reset the earlier date as 2001, the year of the publication of the ICF, as that produced 516 peer reviewed articles from PsychInfo. Panel chose to use PsychInfo and Social Sciences Index - yielding 614 peer reviewed articles. Panel chose to limit search to peer reviewed articles only, as the number of articles seems satisfactory.

Progress to Date - 3 Panel developed a definition of participation to guide article selection and review. Panel came to agreement on abstract exclusion and retention criteria. Developed a format for recording abstract decisions (see next slide). In a final test of the form, two readers independently scored 10 abstracts; reaching 90% agreement on exclusion and retention decisions and 80% on reason for decision.

Progress to Date - 4 Reviewed Cochrane and Campbell Collaboratives and the What Works Clearinghouse for reviews addressing participation. Identified four in the Cochrane collaborative that included participation as an outcome measure. Drafted an article extraction or data collection form for "full" article review.

Next Steps Finalize article extraction data form. Organize and train three student readers. Conduct electronic search. Identify relevant articles from 5 published reviews. Print and review abstracts from electronic search and reviews. Solicit key article nominations from advisory board and research staff. Publish a bibliography of articles retained for use by RTC/IL researchers.
