Who’s most related?

Do Now Pick up the worksheet from the back table. Turn in your Phet Sim: Wolf & Bunny W.S. Update your grades page and add: 3/19 Evidence of Evolution Cosmos quiz at the end of class (the Evolution episode, not last night’s)

Cladograms Cladograms are diagrams that show the relationship among organisms based on traits. Example: # of shared characteristics

Phylogeny They show the evolutionary history. Cladograms are like family trees. Those that are closer and share more traits are more closely related. The base of each branch represents a common ancestor.

# of shared characteristics

Some Look Different

Cladogram #1: 1 st, Look at the traits LanceletLamprey Eel TunaSalamandarLeopard hair0000X eggs0000X 4 legs000XX jaws00XXX vertebrate0XXXX

What species are most closely related? The least? With what species does the Salamander share a common ancestor? Check yourself:

Some vocabulary Primitive –ancestral, or less evolved Outgroup – a group at the base of a tree; used to show what traits are primitive If done with the W.S., work on finishing your vocab IMOW and sketch.

Cosmos Quiz #2 1.What was your favorite part in the episode? 2.Explain why. 3.Write down 2 details that you remember that would provide evidence that you watched it. When done, turn it in to the inbox

3/25/14 Do Now Open your journal to your vocab. Circle the number you think best describes how well you know the word. 1 = no idea, is that a vocab word? 2 = Heard of the word, but don’t understand the definition 3 = Understand the definition, but couldn’t use it in a sentence. Not sure if I could pick out the correct definition from a list. 4 = I understand the definition, can use it in a sentence; I’ll probably be ok on the test. 5 = I know the word, and I could use it to discuss classification or evolution; I got this.

In your group: Assign a recorder – please write large enough for entire class to read up front. Write down your target Discuss & Write down what lessons cover your target Discuss & write down Main Ideas, concepts, and vocabulary important to that target.
