Cladograms Cladograms are diagrams that show the relationship among organisms based on traits. Example: # of shared characteristics
Phylogeny They show the evolutionary history. Cladograms are like family trees. Those that are closer and share more traits are more closely related. The base of each branch represents a common ancestor.

What species are most closely related? The least? With what species does the Salamander share a common ancestor? Check yourself:
Some vocabulary Primitive –ancestral, or less evolved Outgroup – a group at the base of a tree; used to show what traits are primitive If done with the W.S., work on finishing your vocab IMOW and sketch.

Circle the number you think best describes how well you know the word. 1 = no idea, is that a vocab word? 2 = Heard of the word, but don’t understand the definition 3 = Understand the definition, but couldn’t use it in a sentence. Not sure if I could pick out the correct definition from a list. 4 = I understand the definition, can use it in a sentence; I’ll probably be ok on the test. 5 = I know the word, and I could use it to discuss classification or evolution; I got this.
