Frequently Asked Questions  What is a college transfer student? Community college transfer students are those that wish to transfer to another community college or senior-level college or university

Frequently Asked Questions  When can I transfer? Different schools have different policies. Some schools require a minimum number of completed transfer hours. Admissions deadlines vary from institution to institution. Admissions officers at the desired school can advise you on this.

Frequently Asked Questions cont..  What courses should I take before I transfer? Take courses that lead to a college transfer degree (AA or AS)  What’s the difference between AA and AS degree? (AA) want to pursue a 4-yr. degree in a liberal arts discipline (Psychology, Political Sci., Sociology) (AS) want to pursue a 4-yr. degree in computer science, mathematics, engineers…..

Frequently Asked Questions cont..  How can I determine if my courses will transfer? View the Comprehensive Articulation cfnc.org. The Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) ○ A statewide agreement that governs the transfer of credits between NC Community Colleges and NC Public Universities

Frequently Asked Questions cont..  Is it necessary to complete General Education Core before transferring? It is not necessary but ADVISEABLE. Students that don’t will have to complete the specific general ed. requirements of the college or university.

Frequently Asked Questions cont..  Is admission to a UNC institution guaranteed? YES, under the following stipulations: ○ Admission is not assured to a specific campus or program/major. ○ Students must have: Graduated from a NC Community College with an AA or AS Meet all requirements of the CAA At least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale Be eligible for readmission to last institution Meet all application requirements of the receiving institution.

Frequently Asked Questions cont..  How do the UNC Minimum Admissions Requirements (MAR) apply to transfer students? Transfers will be considered to have completed the MAR if: ○ They received the AA or AS or ○ Completed the 44-hour CAA General Education Core ○ If the above requirements are not completed, high school GPA and SAT/ACT score will be used to determine eligibility.

Frequently Asked Questions cont..  Will "D" or "F" grades transfer? No, under the CAA, only courses in which a grade of "C” or higher is earned will transfer.  How many semester hours will transfer? A maximum of 64 semester hours will transfer  When is it best to select a major? As early as possible. The longer a student takes to decide on a major, the more likely it is that some of the courses taken may not apply to the major.

Frequently Asked Questions  How can I choose a college ? (CFNC Matching Assistant) If you know your major, you need to make sure that major is offered. What are your academic and professional ambitions? If you know what your ambitions are and what your major will be, does the campus offer courses in that area? Do you prefer attending a small campus versus a larger one? Do you prefer a campus in a big city, or one that is in a rural community? If you are into a particular sport or sports, does the campus offer it?

Frequently Asked Questions cont..  Is a placement test needed when transferring to a university? The university will decide if a placement test is needed upon transfer. Most will use successful performance in English and mathematics at the community college as proof of skill level and will not require additional testing.

Frequently Asked Questions cont..  Should I speak with an academic advisor/counselor? Yes! It is a good idea to speak with an academic advisor/counselor. The information found on these pages is merely a guide, and does not replace the expert guidance that can be provided by an academic advisor or counselor.
