FORM in general + be + …ing verb „to BE“ present participle

Compare Present Continuous Peter is doing his homework now. We aren´t listening to music at the moment. „Are you washing up?“ „No, I´m reading a book.“ Past Continuous Peter was doing his homework yesterday at 5. We were listening to music in the morning at 7. Were you washing up at 8? No, I was reading a book.
