POP UPS

Pop ups can range from the very simple to the extreme pop up The Simple Pop up will use one main mechanism.

Tester Question What colour was the cat on the washing machine card? Quiz Question 1 How many copper (brown) pennies where there on the piggy bank card? 68 42

The Extreme pop up: An extreme pop up is where various different types of pop up mechanisms are used within one page to create a big desired effect, as seen in the books above and below.

BOX CARD MECHANISM Interesting pop-up designs can be produced by making two cuts to a backing card and bending the card inwards so that it forms a small stand (inside the card). Drawings / images can be placed on the stand so that when the card is opened the image ‘pops’ up. ROTARY or WHEEL CARD MECHANISMS Rotary mechanisms can be used in interesting ways. The greetings card on the left allows the user to rotate a circular card disk. This changes the eyes on the front of the card. A brass split pin holds the disk to the card front but allows it be rotate.

MOUTH MECHANISM The simple folding technique is ideal for forming a mechanism that unfolds when a card is closed. This could be the mouth of a cartoon or similar character. The stages are shown below and involve basic folding and cutting. SLIDE MECHANISMS Slide mechanisms can add parallel movement to a card model. The basic construction is shown below. This can make an impressive greetings card if an image is added to the card front and scenery drawn.

Quiz Question 3 Name the Four types of card mechanisms that you will use in your pop up book? Quiz Question 2 Think about the card that had the face with moving eyes, was it wearing glasses?

Sometimes if a pop up is to cluttered it will draw the eye away from what part of the card you should be looking at. Remember to keep it simple and bright. Now lets test your eyes. Quiz question 4 Tell me what you see below? Be warned there may be more than one thing in each picture! ABC

RED GREEN BLUE ORANGE YELLOW PINK

Quiz Question 5 What colour was the word GREEN?

When designing a product for young children you have to think about how things are presented. Words must be simple and colours bright as shown above in this child friendly alphabet. You will need to think about these things when designing your pop up book.

Finally, Quiz Question 7 Name three of the six animals on the first slide? Quiz Question 6 What two colours where the ice creams on the letter i? Brown & PinkGreen & Yellow Red & OrangeBlue & Purple
