AUDIENCE This project will be aimed towards 1 st through 4 th graders who have the ability to read and write. There should also be a lot of creativity involved in order for them to grasp the entire project and so they are able to produce a good story.

ENVIRONMENT The project will require you to work individually using either a computer or just working with pencil or paper. This project is all about creativity, so the choice is up to you. There will be specific work time everyday that will allow you to also have a good solid period of time that it silent to enhance creativity.

OBJECTIVE You will be learning to recognize a writing style within a given period of time that will last for two to three weeks and once you have read several books by Dr. Seuss, that should give you the ideas needed to create a short story that you will turn into a book with your own illustrations that should meet my given standards.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? When a child is young, his or her brain is more like a sponge. It soaks up information faster than it ever will. This is the opportune time to instill new things, like this writing style, into their minds. This is a technique that is very similar to poetry, which is a popular way for artists to write today. It is also something that could be beneficial towards a child’s future. Overall, it is a mixture of fun and learning. You should have a great time with this project while at the same time, learning a new way to write and expanding your creativity.

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING? This project will require you to write your own short story, “Dr. Seuss style.” We will start with some practice by reading some of his books and then practicing some rhymes. You will then begin to write and form your own story that should make sense, in the Dr. Seuss’ world that is. You will then put this story together and once it is finished, you will also illustrate it. Once the project is complete, we will bind it together like a book so it is yours to keep and share with your family.

WHO IS DR. SEUSS? Dr. Seuss, also known as Theodor Seuss Geisel, was born in 1904 in Springfield Massachusetts. As a teen, Seuss left Springfield to attend Dartmouth College where he became lead editor of their humor magazine. His work on this magazine is where he first began to sign his work with the name, Seuss. Dr. Seuss himself is often represented by the popular character, The Cat in the Hat.

WHO IS DR. SEUSS CONTINUED… When Seuss talked about his work, he accredited his desire and ability to rhyme to his mother, Henrietta Seuss Geisel. He stated that he remembers her soothing him and his siblings to sleep by chanting rhymes that she remembered from her childhood. On September 24, 1991, Dr. Seuss Died

WHAT DID HE DO? In his life time he wrote and illustrated 44 children’s books that have been translated into 15 different languages and have sold over 200 million copies. Other achievements of his work involve him earning two Academy awards, two Emmy awards, a Peabody award and the Pulitzer Prize. His works have also provided the source for eleven television specials, a Broadway musical and a feature-length motion picture.

WHY IS HE IMPORTANT? Seuss became so popular because of his imagination. He created such strange and out-there stories that were barely understood, which is what makes them so memorable. They are also appealing to kids because they make no sense. His stories have always contain hidden themes and a lot of them don't even have a satisfactory ending, so you're always left wondering what happens next. He also quite often repeats himself over and over so that you have no choice but to have his catchy rhymes stuck in your head. Most of all though, his books are very much so enjoyed by his audience, which is children.
