From University website: The University of Strathclyde began in 1796 when John Anderson, Professor of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University, left instructions in his will for 'a place of useful learning' - a university open to everyone. His vision was realised when Anderson's University opened later the same year.

DMEM = Industrial Engineering DMEM combines teaching of Art, Manufacturing and Business create make manage DMEM Department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management DMEM = Industrial Engineering DMEM is an interdisciplinary department that is focused on the academic study of Design, Manufacture and Operations Management. Our four degree programs focus on different blends of these topics. Knowledge is delivered through three ‘spheres’ of learning. This provides the breadth to learning. The courses develop creative skills, technological knowledge and business acumen.

To transform good ideas into products you need ……… To transform good ideas into products you need ………..designers, engineers and managers “To turn really interesting ideas and fledgling technologies into a company that can continue to innovate for years, it requires a lot of disciplines…” Steve Jobs

DMEM = Industrial Engineer Only department in UK combining end-to-end multidisciplinary expertise from creative design, through engineering design, manufacture and management of the entire system. Creative Design Engineering Manufacturing Processes Management

Create… Different models of the design process Total Design Engineering Design : Dyson’s cyclone & ball vacuum cleaner Different models of the design process Total Design Extreme Design Mechatronic Design Prototype design Conceptual design Typically consists of idea generation, concept development, testing and manufacturing of a physical product or service. Concerned with satisfying and anticipating people's needs and aspirations: Aesthetically pleasing High performance Low cost Reliable Easy to use Etc. The Dyson product shows the new application of an existing technology (the cyclone). In addition to this, Dyson put lots of effort into understanding the physical issues associated with household cleaning (see steps diagram) and try to develop products to meet those needs.

Make… Food and drink Electronics Consumer products Textiles Automotive Designing and managing complex manufacturing systems requires highly skilled and innovative engineers Requires a thorough understanding of manufacturing engineering, assembly technologies and process control in a broad range of industries industries such as: Food and drink Electronics Consumer products Textiles Automotive Aerospace These two Apple products are very well designed from a visual point of view, but it would not be possible without manufacuring excellence. In the product on the left, the stand has been designed so that it is strong enough and well balanced while still looking elegant. The laptop is the thinnest on the market (can fit in an envelope) and to do this there has to be extremely efficient use of space inside. Apple iMac & MacBook Air

Manage… Airbus 380, biggest plane in the world, is made up of thousands of parts and hundreds of people all over the world are involved in its construction. Managing and co-ordinating these complex supply chains and networks of CAD and design information is a huge challenge. About creating and managing competitive businesses through innovative strategies, products and processes using traditional and contemporary technologies. Requires core knowledge and skills in: Business and management Product Development Marketing and finance Leadership and people management Entrepreneurship Contemporary technologies http://www.aviationexplorer.com/a380_facts.htm: Airbus 380, biggest plane in the world, is made up of thousands of parts and hundreds of people all over the world are involved in its constructing. Managing and co-ordinating these complex supply chains and networks of CAD and design information is a huge challenge. These are the types of issues addressed in management aspects of the course. “Airbus operates 16 manufacturing sites across Europe, most of which produce parts for the new A380 airliner. In a first step, the front and rear sections of the fuselage are loaded on an Airbus RORO ship, Ville de Bordeaux, in Hamburg, northern Germany, whence they are shipped to the United Kingdom. There the huge wings, which are manufactured at Filton in Bristol and Broughton in north Wales, are transported by barge to Mostyn docks, where the ship adds them to its cargo. In Saint-Nazaire, western France, the ship trades the fuselage sections from Hamburg for larger, assembled sections, some of which include the nose. The ship unloads in Bordeaux. Afterwards, the ship picks up the belly and tail sections in Cadiz, southern Spain, and delivers them to Bordeaux. From there, the A380 parts are transported by barge to Langon, and by road to Toulouse, where the A380s are assembled before being flown to Hamburg to be furnished and painted. “
