Background: A Long Walk Home Odessa is a maid for a white family in Montgomery, AL, in She rides the bus to work everyday, where she must sit in the back or stand if a white person wants to sit in her seat. Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat around this time, which sparked the bus strike, similar to many other non-violent strikes African Americans had been demonstrating.
