GAMES IN THE PLAYGROUND WERE CAUSING ARGUMENTS PEOPLE DIDN’T ACCEPT THAT THEY WERE OUT THEY ARGUED WITH EACH OTHER THEY BROKE THE RULES OF THE GAMES PEOPLE WANTED TO WIN AND BE ON THE BEST TEAM. WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM?

encourage people to play fairly put up fair play posters make one referee from each team to make fair decisions Choose a fair player of the week THE PLAN

As a year group we agreed on 3 or 4 simple rules for each sport. We made posters of the rules. We discussed the rules and the posters at school assembly. We displayed the posters around the school. We told the teams they must always have a referee for each team who must wear a red vest. ACT: What did we do?

At the end of lunch and recess every day we ask the students to think about who has been playing fairly in their game and nominate them to be a fair player. They have to be able to explain why they have nominated that person. We write the names on a chalkboard under the COLA. At the end of the week we put all the names in a cup and draw the lucky winner’s name out at assembly. NOMINATIONS

The winner gets to keep the Fair Play trophy in their class for the next week. At the end of the term the fair players for that term play a special game in extra play time and a treat. The winners’ names are displayed on a board under the COLA. REWARDS

We thought about how it was going and we made some changes. We introduced mini fair play trophies so winners had something they could keep and take home. We limited the nominations to one from each class as there were too many nominations and it was taking a long time. We decided to add rules for handball. We decided Kinder students did not have to have a reason for their nomination if they could not explain properly. MODIFY

Teachers and students have noticed that there is less conflict in the playground. Students are using fair play language all the time. From time to time we ask students how it’s going and get their feedback. It has been very positive. IS IT WORKING?

We have noticed one problem is that most students always pick their friends for their teams and others complain the teams are not fair. We need to find a way to solve this. Sometimes people just nominate their friends for fair play awards so maybe we need to make sure the nominations are agreed by other players in the game. WHAT NEXT?
