Sir Allan MacNab Secondary School The Advanced Placement & Advanced Placement Prep Program For Highly Motivated Students

Welcome to Sir Allan MacNab Secondary School AGENDA n Welcome n Overview of AP n Advantages of AP n Models of AP Delivery n AP Pathways n MacNab’s AP Staff n Informal Discussion Time with AP Teachers

What is the Advanced Placement (AP) Program? The Advanced Placement (AP) Program: n Is an internationally recognized program of study for highly motivated students. n Began with a study 50 years ago by three universities: Harvard, Yale and Princeton.

History of the AP Program n The intent was to facilitate students’ transition from high school to university by enriching the high school curriculum. n Today, the AP program is sponsored by the College Board, a national nonprofit educational association of universities and high schools.

AP Exams n Students have the option of writing AP exams in the last year of the AP course. n Exams are sent out to be marked externally by the College Board. n Exams are administered in May at the same date and time world-wide. Our students will write their exams at Sir Allan MacNab Secondary School.

International Appeal n AP exams are recognized by universities throughout Canada, United States, Europe and Asia. n 35 courses are offered in 20 subject areas. n In 2005, 2.1 million AP exams were administered worldwide.

AP Statistics n Globally: 59.6% of students receive 3, 4 or 5 on AP exams. n In Ontario: 72.7% of students receive 3, 4 or 5 on AP exams.

Advantages of AP n Provides university credits or advanced placement for AP examinations successfully taken while still in high school. n Offers excellent curriculum. n Increases students’ confidence in their ability to achieve at an internationally recognized level. n Prepares students for success in university.

Models of Delivery of AP in Ontario Many schools in Ontario use one of the following methods in preparing students for the AP exams: n The AP Coordinator at the school provides material so that students can prepare for AP exams on their own.

Models of Delivery of AP in Ontario (continued) n AP students are grouped in classes with regular academic students. n Teachers work with students on AP material in small groups before and after school. n AP students are grouped in dedicated AP classes (Congregated classes).

Model of Delivery at Sir Allan MacNab Secondary School n Starting in September 2010, Sir Allan MacNab Secondary School will offer congregated, enriched AP Prep courses – covering both the Ontario and the AP curricula – from Grades in Math, Science, English and History. In September 2011 Grade 12 AP courses will be added.

Benefits of the MacNab Model of Delivery n Provides Enrichment – Students enjoy studying with like-minded peers in an enriched setting dedicated to Advanced Placement. n Facilitates Flexibility – Students can choose degree of involvement in the program. They can prepare for as few or as many AP exams as they wish.

Research about AP students shows AP Students, typically, n Achieve higher grade point averages, n Go on to graduate school at a rate double that of their non-AP peers, and n Qualify for more scholarships.

AP Pathways Grade 9 to 11 AP Prep programs of study at Sir Allan MacNab Secondary School include: Academic English Academic Math Academic Science Academic History Flexibility – Students can opt for one or more of these courses.
