October Mount Royal University - Calgary - Alberta - Canada Welcome to eDOL Our Faculty’s Contribution to the World of Documentation, Journaling & Portfolios

eDOL as a core component across the MT Program... ✤ It provides a unifying element, linking the semesters together ✤ It ties the journals, assignments artefacts, reflections together into a the gradual development of a professional portfolio ✤ It helps you use ICT for authentic purposes - documentation, reflection, web authoring, multimedia development ✤ It is consistent with personalized, lifelong / lifewide learning ✤ It’s actually really fun! And, it helps to make your thinking visible!

... oh, and it was a requirement for the entire program (especially field) ✤ See your handbook for the minimal requirements for your portfolios - Key Learnings, Artefacts and Evidence ✤ Talk with your instructors for details as to what examples of how you might document evidence to support the Key Learning ✤ Let’s tour the eDOL site... there are riches there! Particularly the Mini Manuals, ePortfolio Authoring & Pedagogical Support Doc

... getting started... ✤ start collecting... make everything digital... ✤ create a folder on your computer and back it up often ✤ get a BIG USB drive and back up all your “evidence” so you can bring it to class and be ready to use the content and collect more ✤ create a Delicious account so you can collect / organize / annotate URLS ( ✤ download.exe ( and study the mini manual or use iWEB (MAC owners only)

Key Understandings for Semester 2 1. I have begun to conceptualize learning and teaching (curriculum) as a form of inquiry 2. I am learning to use my understanding of curriculum to plan worthwhile classroom experiences 3. I show an emerging ability to conduct classroom experiences to promote worthwhile learning 4. I am learning how to assess both what is happening, and its effects in terms of: the quality of interactions with students; and how they engage, what they learn, and how they feel about their learning; and the conditions that influence them 5. From my assessment, I am attempting to envision how I might enhance the learning that occurs.

Concept Map Your Portfolio Pages ✤ Download free concept mapping software (FreeMind - cMAP - Inspiration - 30 day free trial SmartIdeas ✤ Begin to identify the organization for your portfolio

... a sample

... from concept to framework

… but what about the actual content and where it comes from …

If it’s all about collections, what should I collect? ✤ Digital, pedagogical documentation ✤ A form, trigger, prompt of reflection ✤ A way of making explicit what we are seeing / thinking / pondering ✤ Requires conscious focus on what is happening ✤ It is intentional ✤ Allows us to consider what might otherwise remain unobserved or overlooked ✤ It supports an ongoing, interpretive process of meaning making

Sources of content - why the eJournal is so important as a repository ✤ Images - of actions, boards, screenshots, hallways, student work ✤ Videos - short clips (20 seconds is lots) ✤ Audio clips ✤ Pdf files ✤ WORD documents ✤ Journal reflections ✤ exchanges - with permission

How exe Works ✤ Please, do the tutorial ( read the mini manual ( attend a workshophttp://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/EXELearning ✤ Watch this little example... we’ll work through it together... ✤ If you are a MAC and not particularly interested in distributed learning / D2L / blended learning - use iWEB ( ✤ Some examples from last semester... Gordon’s links …
