22nd April 2009 Learning Disabilities Overview 2012 Board of Directors in Public 29 February 2012

Learning Disability  What is LD  How many people have LD  What are the MH needs  How does MH fit with LD service  Carers may have LD (ageing population)

Relevance to MH Service  Equal access – Equality Act & Human Rights  CQC Indicators – Green Light  Increased MH needs

 58 times more likely to die aged under 50 than other people.  Just 1 in 3 people with a LD take part in some form of education or training.  Less than 1 in 5 people with a LD work (compared with 1 in 2 disabled people generally), at least 65% of people with a LD want to work.

 Half of all families with children with a LD live in poverty.  At least half of all adults with a LD live in the family home – (limited chance to gain independence, learn key skills and make choices about their own lives).  Just 15% of people with a LD have a secure long-term tenancy or own their own home.

What we need to remember  Diagnostic overshadowing  Higher MH & Physical Health needs  Communication reasonable adjustments  Carers  Keep it simple  Equal rights and access

Developments  Green Light and Local MH/LD Group  Joint Protocol  Staff training  Clinical Specialist Role  Increased information – staff and easyread  Service User Interview Audit  Recording LD  Joint working/training  Non Executive Director Champion Role  LD Children's team in North East Essex

What you can do  Raise awareness  Public engagement  Carers  Be alert and sensitive to this client group
