The Students’ Union Advice Centre

Our Mission Statement: The SU Advice Centre offers a free, independent and impartial service on all the main issues affecting students at MMU. We aim to ensure your time at university is not lessened through a lack of support or knowledge of your rights.

We like to think of ourselves as…. a Citizens Advice Bureau for MMU students!

We advise on almost any issue. The areas we specialise in are; Student Finance –Tuition Fees, Maintenance Loans/Grants, MMU Bursaries –Specialist grants (Childcare Grant, Disabled Students Allowance, Parents Learning Allowance) –Access to Learning Fund (commonly known as MMU’s hardship Fund)

Personal Finance - Welfare and disability benefits; including tax credits, housing benefit - Debt (rent/mortgage, credit cards, benefit overpayments) - Council Tax liability

Academic Issues –Disciplinary and plagiarism procedures, including representation at meetings –Exceptional Factors applications –Complaints and appeals Housing –Contract checking –Tenants’ rights, eviction, disrepair –Tenancy Deposit Protection Scheme

We also work closely with the University Student Services and frequently refer students to Counselling, Careers, Learner Development Service and Faculty Student Support Officer’s

How do we operate? We offer advice sessions at the SU on Oxford Road, the SU at Crewe, Didsbury campus, Hollings campus and Gaskell campus Appointments Drop-in service Telephone service service Booklets Website with FAQ’s Home visits if required

Social Policy The SU Advice Centre is here to represent individuals, however, we can help the whole student body at MMU through social policy work. We keep social policy records of any cases which show policy changes might need to be made at MMU. We then pass on this information to our Student Voice Manager to be used in campaigns.
