‘Specific Learning Difficulties/Differences (SpLD)’ Examples of SpLDs are: dyslexia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, AD[H]D (Attention Deficit [Hyperactivity] Disorder) Disability: includes sensory, physical mobility, mental health, anxiety, health conditions and autistic spectrum condition Specific Learning Difficulties are difficulties or differences that are persistent and impact on learning

We offer advice on: dyslexia assessment specialist and/or personal support ‘reasonable adjustments’ to learning, teaching and assessment accessible facilities and equipment applying for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) Our service is personalised, confidential, friendly and professional – “We work with you” We are able to offer you advice and guidance on how to access assessments and support Our staff are specialists who carry out informal dyslexia assessments and bespoke one to one support sessions Reasonable adjustments are made according to individual requirements and in line with recommendations given by your Assessment of Study Needs Report via your application for DSA (Disabled Students’ Allowance) When applying to your funding body, you should tick the appropriate box to indicate that you have a disability. The funding body will send you an additional form to apply for DSA funding. Support that is paid for via DSA is not means tested and will not have to be repaid. There are, however, certain criteria that may impact upon an application and each application is treated individually. It is best to apply for the DSA as soon as you are able to as the process takes time.

How to access funding and support for SpLDs: If not already assessed, firstly: Try the online dyslexia checklist on our website Contact us for an informal assessment Have a full assessment, if applicable If already assessed, firstly: Book a consultation appointment with us If at any time you think you may have an SpLD, or other support requirement, please contact us for information, support and guidance. If you have already been assessed as having a SpLD, please contact us to book a consultation appointment. During this appointment we will ensure that your report is valid and up to date. If it is not, we will be able to advise you about arranging to have another assessment.

How to access funding and support for SpLDs: With a relevant full diagnostic report in place: Apply for examination modifications Access interim support Apply for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) Feedback guidelines When DSA funding is agreed: Access recommended equipment and support At this stage you can book a feedback appointment with us. During this appointment we would assist you in applying for examination modifications, such as extra time, reader and audio exam questions. Alternative assessments may be available in some circumstances. Modifications for class based examinations or tests must be agreed between yourself and your tutor. We are able to offer interim one to one support, and also small group support on specific areas of study, whilst you are waiting for your DSA application to be processed. You will be able to access this as required prior to your funding being agreed. Once your funding has been agreed, you will be able to access the support that has been recommended and approved by the funding body. You will be able to see the same advisor each time when you receive this support. Feedback guidelines that identify the specific areas of difficulty that you experience when writing assignments will be provided for you to submit with your assignments and examination scripts. These guidelines suggest ways in which various aspects of your writing can be marked to enable you to improve your writing in future assignments, for instance, asking your tutors to highlight particular spelling, grammar or punctuation errors and provide examples of correction for you to apply. The guidelines do not impact upon your assignment marks; you must still meet the course requirements.

Scotopic Sensitivity (also known as Irlen Syndrome or Visual stress): a visual disturbance that causes distortion of the print when reading. eye sight can otherwise be perfect usually if reading black on a white background can be mild or severe Contact us for a short assessment – coloured overlays often eliminate distortion of text This test can be carried out in less than 30 minutes. Full overlays cost £5 each and reading rulers cost £2. if you are in receipt of the Disabled Students’ Allowance, then you will be able to claim this back from your funding body if you send them your receipt.

Accessing support for other disabilities (sensory, physical mobility, mental health, anxiety, autistic spectrum condition): Obtain medical evidence stating how your disability affects your learning Contact the Inclusion team for an advisory interview Apply for DSA - send medical evidence Access recommended equipment and support when funding is agreed A member of the Inclusion Team will be able to advise you about the type of evidence that the funding body requires when you are applying for DSA for disabilities that are supported by medical evidence. The team is based in the Student Information Centre on the ground floor Once your application for funding has been agreed, you will receive a final letter from your funding body and will then be able to access your funded equipment training and support

Support is provided ‘in house’ by fully qualified SpLD staff and Learning Facilitators Other services you may contact us about: Academic Skills development Accessing Information and ICT Assistive Technology Support is provided by our qualified SpLD staff and Learning Facilitators. You can also contact us for help and advice on academic skills, using ICT and assistive technologies.
