Minus Grades Implementation

Minus Grades Policy On December 14, 2006 the UF Faculty Senate voted to implement minus grades. The decision was made in order to provide faculty with more options for assigning grades. This will become effective with the Summer 2009 term.

Grading Scale Comparison Current Grading Scale A = 4.0 B+ = 3.5 B = 3.0 C+ = 2.5 C = 2.0 D+ = 1.5 D = 1.0 E = 0.0 New Scale A = 4.0 A– = 3.67 B+ = 3.33 B = 3.0 B– = 2.67 C+ = 2.33 C = 2.0 C– = 1.67 D+ = 1.33 D = 1.0 D– = 0.67 E = 0.0 E0 = 0.0 Never Attended or participated E1 = 0.0 Stopped attending or participating prior to end of class I = 0.0

Overall Impact of Minus Grades Implementing the new grading scale will change the grade point value of “+” grades. Fall ’08Summer ‘09 Class 1 (3 CR) B+ = 3.50B+ = 3.33 Class 2 (3 CR) B+ = 3.50B+ = 3.33 Class 3 (3 CR) C+ = 2.50C+ = 2.33 Class 4 (3 CR) C+ = 2.50C+ = 2.33 Term GPA = 3.00 = 2.83

Overall Impact of Minus Grades Full grades to minus grades. Fall ’08Summer ‘09 Class 1 (3 CR) D = 1.00D- = 0.67 Class 2 (3 CR) C = 2.00C- = 1.67 Class 3 (3 CR) B = 3.00B- = 2.67 Class 4 (3 CR) B = 3.00B- = 2.67 Term GPA = 2.25 = 1.92

Overall Impact of Minus Grades Mixed minus and plus grades. Fall ’08Summer ‘09 Class 1 (3 CR) B+ = 3.50 A- = 3.67 Class 2 (3 CR) C+ = 2.50 B- = 2.67 Class 3 (3 CR) A = 4.00 A- = 3.67 Class 4 (3 CR) D+ = 1.50 C- = 1.67 Term GPA = 2.87 = 2.92

Grade Deficit Definition Policy A grade point deficit is defined as the number of grade points below a C average on hours attempted at the University of Florida. If the grade point average is less than 2.0, there is a grade point deficit.

Minus Grade Implementation Result The implementation of minus grades will not change the definition of a grade point deficit. A C average will remain a 2.00.

Minus Grade Implementation Result Only grades higher than C will lower a deficit. Every credit of C+ earned removes.33 from a deficit (a C+ in a three-credit course removes.99 deficit points); every credit of B removes 1 deficit point; and every credit of A removes 2 deficit points.

Minus Grade Implementation Result (Deficit Points Removed Per Credit Hour) Fall ‘08 A = 2.0 B+ = 1.5 B = 1.0 C+ = 0.5 Summer ‘09 A = 2.0 A– = 1.67 B+ = 1.33 B = 1.0 B– = 0.67 C+ = 0.33

Satisfactory-Unsatisfactory (S-U) Policy Subject to college degree program and department guidelines, students may take elective course work and earn grades of S (Satisfactory) or U (Unsatisfactory). A grade of S is equal to a C or better. Grades earned under the S-U option do not carry grade point values and are not computed in the University of Florida grade point average.

Minus Grade Implementation Result A grade of “C-” or lower equals a grade of “U”.

General Education Credit Policy A grade of “ C” or better is required to earn General Education credit.

Minus Grade Implementation Result A “C-” or lower will not result in an award of General Education credit.

Writing and Math (Gordon Rule) Policy The state of Florida requires that all students complete a writing and math requirement, formerly known as the Gordon Rule. Students must earn a grade of C or higher in courses taken to fulfill the writing and math requirement; such courses cannot be taken S-U.

Minus Grade Implementation Result Students earning a “C-” or lower in writing/math courses taken to fulfill these requirements will not receive writing/math (Gordon Rule) credit.

President's Honor Roll Policy Students will be recognized for the President’s Honor Roll if they achieve a perfect 4.0 GPA with at least 15 hours of graded academic course work (excluding S-U) in the fall or spring semester. Each student so honored will receive the President’s Honor Roll certificate.

Minus Grades Implementation Result “A-” grades will not yield the perfect 4.0 GPA required to achieve the President’s Honor Roll recognition.

UF Repeat Course Policy Grades EarnedGPA/ Credit Computation First grade lower than a C, Second grade of C or higher Each grade computed in grade point average; credit earned only once. First grade lower than a C, Second grade lower than a C Each grade computed in grade point average; credit earned only once. First grade of C or higher, Second grade lower than a C Each grade computed in grade point average; credit earned only once. First grade of C or higher, Second grade of C or higher Only first grade computed in GPA; credit earned only for first attempt

Minus Grades Implementation Result “C-” is a lower grade than the required threshold grade of “C” in repeat course processing.

Issues For Colleges To Review Amend Summer 2009 syllabi to reflect the addition of minus grades by March 2009 Review course prerequisite parameters Review college specific guidelines for academic monitoring (probation, holds, tracking) Review Dean’s List requirements Review Honors GPA requirements for graduation Assess SASS audit implications Update catalog and website displays to reflect any changes relative to minus grade implementation.
