3 Required Course A course that must be taken in order to graduate. Elective Course A course you may select to take but which is not required for graduation. Prerequisite A course that must be completed before the next course can be completed. A-B-C Grades that must be earned in a subject area in order to move up to Level 1 classes. Level 1 Classes In middle school, this refers to advance classes which students can qualify to take. D Semester average that will result in being removed from a Level 1 class. STAAR The end of course tests that will replace TAKS in high school. Academic Vocabulary

4 New Words for Academic Success….

5 Academic Vocabulary Student Success Initiative The law that says you must pass the Reading and Math 8 th grade TAKS tests in order to be promoted to 9 th grade. Transcript This is the official record of credits and grades earned by students. It will closely examined by colleges as the decided which students to admit. 3 Some universities prefer students to have three years of foreign language instruction in high school. Accelerate to Algebra If you are taking on-level math courses, but want to take Algebra in 8 th grade you must take this summer program.
