Ship Plumbing Materials In the new construction and in repairs and replacements on old vessels, only new pipe, tubing or fittings should be used in the potable - water after system, and in the wash-water system when wash water may be used to supplement water after treatment.

Ship Plumbing Read and discuss, (1) Air gaps (2) Back flow preventers (3) Back flow valves (4) Fixtures (5) Prevention of backflow of wastes waters into the potable waters system (6) Drainage system (7) prevention of back flow o liquid wastes into the potable waters system. Guide to Ship Sanitation, Vincent B. Lamoureux, World Healt Organization, Geneva 1967, Article 7.2 Page

Ship Plumbing Water Storage on Ships Sanitary design considerations: Potable water should be stored in one or more tanks that are so constructed located and protected as to be safe against any contamination from outside the tank. The tanks should be designed so that cross connections between tanks holding non-potable water or pipes containing non-potable water are prevented.

Ship Plumbing

Sanitary design considerations: Potable water piping should be painted blue or striped with light blue bands or a light blue stripe at fittings on each side of partitions, decks and bulkheads and at intervals not exceeding 5 m in all spaces except where the décor would be marred by such markings. Potable water outlets should be labelled POTABLE WATER. All non-potable outlets should be labelled UNFIT FOR DRINKING.

Ship Plumbing Water Production on Ships Two methods of water production on ships are: (1) Reverse osmosis desalination; and (2) Distillation.

Ship Plumbing Reverse Osmosis: The reverse osmosis process includes pretreatment, trans-membrane transport whereby water is transported across the membrane under pressure and salts are excluded.

Ship Plumbing Distillation: A process that uses heat and pressure changes to vaporize seawater, thus liberating it of its dissolved and suspended solids.
