4 Air Gaps, Vacuum Breaker, and Back Flow Preventers EO 011.02 TP 8 a&b Flushometer: should be equipped with an approved vacuum breaker. The vacuum breaker should be installed on the discharge side of the flushing valve with the critical level at least 4-inches above the overflow rim of the bowl. Flushing Tanks: Flushing tanks should be equipped with an approved ball cock. The ball-cock should be installed with the critical level of the vacuum breaker at least 1 inch above the full opening of the overflow pipe. In cases where the ball-cock has no hush tube, the bottom of the water supply inlet should be installed 1 inch above the full opening of the overflow pipe.

7 Air Gaps, Vacuum Breaker, and Back Flow Preventers EO 011.02 TP 8 c,d &e Trough Urinals: Trough urinals should be equipped with a vacuum breaker installed on the discharge side of the last valve and not less than 6 inches above the washdown pipe, except in urinals in which the washdown pipe is not exposed. Lawn Sprinklers: Lawn sprinkler systems should be equipped with a backflow preventer on the discharge side of each of the downstream control valves. The backflow preventer should be at least 6 inches above the surrounding ground. Where combination control valves and backflow preventers are installed, the bottom of the valve should constitute the bottom of the backflow preventer. Valve Outlet: Fixtures with hose attachments should be protected by a backflow preventer installed 6 inches above the highest point of usage and on the discharge side of the valve.

8 Air Gaps, Vacuum Breaker, and Back Flow Preventers EO 011.02 TP 8c&e Backflow Preventers: should be installed with any supply fixture, the outlet end of which may at times be submerged such as hose and spray, direct flushing valves, aspirators and under-rim water supply connections to a plumbing fixture or receptacle in which the surface of the water in the fixture or receptacle is exposed at all times to atmospheric pressure. The type of preventer referred to will not protect against flow when water is discharged through it into a space which is higher than atmospheric pressures.

9 Air Gaps, Vacuum Breaker, and Back Flow Preventers EO 011.02 TP 8 f,g&h Effective Opening: is the minimum cross sectional area at the point of water supply discharge. measured or expressed in terms of (1) the diameter of a circle; or (2) if the opening is not circular, the diameter of a circle of equivalent cross sectional area. Materials: backflow preventers should be made of corrosion-resistant material, of design and proportions which will not deteriorate or deform under reasonable service conditions. Tests and Performance: Backflow preventers should have been tested and approved to meet tests and performances as required for Backflow Preventers. FIN !!!!
