Part of the BRE Trust Protecting People, Property and the Planet What have fire doors ever done for us? Ian Stewart Certification scheme manager June 2014

Today’s agenda  Role of fire doors?  What has been going wrong?  Fire door defects  Third part approved installer schemes  Fire Door Education Programme – BRE/DHF

Role of fire doors? In the event of a fire:  Maintain fire compartmentation and reduce smoke spread.  Protect escape routes to allow safe evacuation.  Protect escape routes to allow search and rescue to proceed.  Save lives and protect property.

Fire doors in action

What has been going wrong? On construction sites. Poor installation. No certification. Poor knowledge and understanding of the role of fire doors. No inspection No demand for third party approved fire door installers. No demand for trained operatives.

Non compliant fire doors?

What has been going wrong? In exisiting buildings Little or no repair and maintenance Poor fire door inspection by risk assessors. Too many doors to check and no budget to do it. The Regulatory Reform Order 2005 is helping to expose many non compliant fire door installations.

Third party approved installer schemes?  Reduce risk and liability for manufacturers, end users, insurers, clients, specifiers, contractors, legislators ………  Reduce the risk of loss of life and product failures by ensuring professional installation  Reduce damage caused to property and hence insurance losses should a fire occur  Compliance with Regulation 38.  Encourage insurers and Building Control that fire safety has been given appropriate consideration  Regulatory Reform Order – certification and traceability
