Various scholarships are available for those who are interested in traveling to other countries and learning new language and customs.

Freeman Foundation Scholarship

Three Unique Experiences CHINA – Summer & Fall 2009 VIETNAM – Fall 2009 & Spring 2010 JAPAN – Spring & Summer 2010 KOREA – TBA

GRANT COVERS: - TUITION, ROOM AND MOST MEALS AT KCC - R/T AIRFARE FROM HONOLULU TO ASIA, TUITION, ROOM, AND BOARD - STIPEND

Who is eligible? U.S. Citizen Full-time or Part-time (9 credits or more) student at any of the 7 Community Colleges in Hawaii Cumulative GPA of 3.0 No knowledge of the target language is required (student can not have any more than college level 101 in the target language)

The Freeman Scholarship Ten Freeman scholarships are awarded each semester. The scholarships support students in any field of study to participate in a two-semester program. The first semester will consist of 12 credits in an intensive content-based second language program (Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese or Korean) at Kapi‘olani Community College, followed by a semester abroad.

The Freeman Scholarship Eligibility and Criteria: You must: Be a U.S. citizen at the time of application. Be a full-time or part-time (9 or more credits) student in one of the community colleges in the UH system. Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0. No knowledge of target language is required. (No more than college level 101 in the target language.)

Honda Scholarship for International Study The purpose of the Honda Scholarship for International Study is to promote international understanding through support for international travel and study. Deadline: March 20, 2009 (Friday) Five Honda scholarships of $3,000-5,000 each are awarded annually.

The Honda Scholarship provides support for University of Hawai‘i Community College students with a focused and well-developed proposal who wish to incorporate an international experience into their academic program.

The Honda Scholarship Five Honda scholarships of $3,000-5,000 each are awarded annually. The scholarship supports students in any field of study who participate in University of Hawai‘i exchange programs or semester or academic year study abroad programs sponsored by other institutions.

Who can apply? Students must be degree-seeking and can be selected from any field of study. Community College students who are in at least their second semester of study at any of the UHCC campuses (eligible campuses include Hawai‘i, Honolulu, Kapi‘olani, Kaua‘i, Leeward, Maui, and Windward).

Who can apply? Minimum GPA of 3.5. Only Hawai‘i residents are eligible. Awards will be made on the basis of academic merit to students in good academic standing. Consideration will be given to service to the community and other activities and experience of the applicant.

Who can apply? Applicants may be enrolled part-time, but must be making progress towards a degree as evidenced by continuing enrollment and specific courses taken. Awards will be given for one semester, one academic year, or a minimum of six (6) weeks of intensive study or six (6) credits. Students may be awarded a Honda Scholarship only once.

The Monbukagakusho Scholarship 3-Year Scholarship in Japan April 2010 to March 2013 Deadline: March 20, 2009 (Friday) Participants must be a high school graduate and be 17 – 21 years of age as of April 1, 2010.

The Monbukagakusho (Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture, Government of Japan) offers scholarships to students who wish to study at a Japanese Senshu-gakko (professional training school).

2-3 applicants will be selected from Hawaii. Tuition, room and board will be fully covered. Eligibility and Criteria: Participants must be a high school graduate. Participants must be 17 – 21 years of age as of April 1, 2010 (i.e. born between 4/2/1988 and 4/1/1993) Note: There will be Japanese, English and Math Tests.

Each applicant will receive one year of intensive Japanese language training followed by two years of professional education and training program in their chosen area at selected Senshu-gakko (Japanese equivalent of community college/technical college).

Selected applicants will study in one of the following areas: Civil Engineering Architecture Electrical Engineering Electronics Telecommuni-cations Nutrition Photography Tourism Infant Education Secretarial Studies Hotel Management Fashion, Dressmaking Design Other fields

JAPAN Hakuoh University Service Learning Program 10-week Intensive Japanese Language and Culture Program Deadline: March 20, 2009 (Friday) Open to all UHCC students in Service Learning Programs.

The program offers: Experiences in Japanese culture. Homestay Experience with a Japanese Family. Field trips to various cultural sites in Tokyo, Yokohama and Nikko.
