Scientific Method Identify a problem What do you want to know? What question do you want to answer? What problem do you want to solve? An OBSERVATION.
How do we do Science?. Reminder: What is Science? The goal of science is to investigate and understand the natural world, to explain events in the natural.

 There is no single “scientific method”  Most scientific investigations tend to have common stages involved  These stages include: Making/collecting.
A way to answer questions & solve problems How we understand the world around us A way or process used to investigate what is happening around you It provides.
Scientific Method The way scientists investigate the natural world and propose explanations based on the evidence they gathered.
Scientific Method: Science is ultimately based on observation (perceiving objects or events using one of the five senses) Observations often lead to questions.
1.3 Scientific Thinking and Processes KEY CONCEPT Scientific Method Science is a way of thinking, questioning, and gathering evidence.

Scientific Method Method of scientific investigation Four MAJOR steps: Identify a problem Form a hypothesis Perform an experiment Conclusion

Identify a problem Phenomena that requires investigation Questions Why? How? What? When? Where?

Form a Hypothesis Make observations Collect data Research previous information Use observations, data, research to form a HYPOTHESIS An educated ‘guess’ that best answers the problem

Conduct an Experiment Test hypothesis by controlling variables An experiment should test the hypothesis only Other variables must be strictly controlled Insures validity Experiments must be reproducible Independent scientists must be able to perform the same experiment and obtain the same results reliability

Conclusion Test results determine whether hypothesis was true or not true If hypothesis is false, redesign and rerun experiment Hypothesis are often false Leads to discovery of the truth

Theory HYPOTHESIS supported by many experiments over time Assumed to be the explanation for phenomena Can NEVER be proved Can be DISPROVED with new scientific evidence
