A day in Year 2….

Reading Daily Readers: every child will be read with 1:1 with the class teacher over a two week period. In addition, teaching assistants will be working with focus children over the course of the week. Book change- for all year 2 children, this will take place on Monday and a Thursday. Books will only be changed if it has been read at home (all children were given a new reading diary yesterday). A reminder that Friday readers will be re-commencing this week. Parents are free to come in from 2:45 to read with their child. In Year 2, children are encouraged to re-read stories so that they can: answer and ask questions, retell the story, predict what might happen and participate in discussions about the book. Guided Readings sessions are weekly. Children will rotate in groups around adults focussing on: a guided read session, comprehension, library, independent reading and a reading led activity. Library sessions form part of our weekly Guided Reading. Children will have the opportunity to change these books on a weekly basis.

Handwriting A new style of handwriting across the school was introduced last year. Pre- cursive handwriting. Everyday, reducing to 3 sessions a week. - practical activities e.g. writing in the air - practising on whiteboards - applying the skills to handwriting books and into sentence work.

English Daily English sessions- reading into writing. The routine- Analysing texts Shared writes Have a go independent writes Big write

Maths A slight change to how maths is taught (Year 2-6) … Mental starter e.g. counting in steps, times tables etc. Short and snappy. Paired talk and whiteboard work. Pictures and quotes to support. Hard, harder and hardest. Consolidation lesson in books at the end of the week.

Homework and spellings All homework, letters and information are given out on a Friday. Homework: one week SPaG based, one week Maths based. Homework is to be returned the following Wednesday. Weekly spellings- a week to practise and a quiz the following Monday.

The Creative Curriculum FUN, CREATIVITY & ACHIEVEMENT Immersive experiences designed to engage and excite the children Discreet foundation lessons Focus on one or two subjects Topic 1- On Trend- Art and DT

PE and Science Timetable Both classes have PE on a Thursday PM. Outdoor PE will change each week depending on the topic (we have the freedom to go out as and when we wish!). Please ensure outdoor kits are in every day because of this. Both classes take part in Science weekly. Week 1 – investigation/ experiment Week 2 – recording of findings

Wellbeing Wednesdays New this year Led by the need of each class Example activities include: Be active –Take a walk, go cycling or play a game of football. Find an activity that you enjoy and make it a part of your life.  Keep learning – learning new skills can give you a sense of achievement and a new confidence e.g. cooking course, start learning to play a musical instrument, or figure out how to fix your bike? Give to others – even the smallest act can count, whether it's a smile, a thank you or a kind word. Larger acts, such as volunteering at your local community centre. Be mindful – be more aware of the present moment, including your thoughts and feelings, your body and the world around you. Some people call this awareness "mindfulness". It can positively change the way you feel about life and how you approach challenges.

Year 2 SATs Year 2 SATs will take place during Summer 1 (May 2019). - 1 x SPAG - 1 x maths arithmetic - 1x maths reasoning - 2x reading Please don’t be alarmed! An information meeting will take place nearer the time.

Other info: Parent mail will not be used after September. If you have not set up parent pay see the office. We now have a fabulous new lunch time provider – Grow.

We are always here if you have any questions, you don’t need to wait until parents evening for this. We are looking forward to working together and starting an exciting year ahead!

Any Questions?
