population distribution & Service Access in Philadelphia Lauren Ring Planning & Research Analyst Philadelphia Corporation for Aging

Neighborhood / Community Levels of Influence Individual Household / Family Neighborhood / Community

Emerging Populations (all ages)

Emerging Populations (all ages)

Isolation at the Neighborhood Level Linguistic / Cultural No reliable bridge to health and social services information outside of immediate community Difficulties in outreach Not always depend on traditional media Word of mouth / Trusted local “bridge” organizations Income / Poverty Transportation Location of services and other resources Crime

Linguistically Isolated Household Example of linguistic/cultural isolation at the neighborhood level: Cambodian, Vietnamese & Chinese migrants all have a higher % of individuals that don’t speak English than Dominicans However, fewer percentages of those groups live in linguistically isolated households than Dominicans Assuming that these migrant groups are equally likely to live in multi-generational households (where the children may pick up English more quickly), why are the Dominicans more isolated at the household level? Not Fluent in English Linguistically Isolated Household

A large proportion of the Dominican population lives in areas where the neighborhood is linguistically isolated Low-income Latinos are currently the most geographically segregated minority group in Philadelphia

Limitations of Neighborhood Level Data in Philly Data We Have Data We’d Like Age & sex Language Disability status Self-care & independent living difficulties Income / Poverty Household type / living alone Geocoded locations (crime, hospitals, senior centers, etc.) Location of community based organizations outside the aging network (churches, civic associations, etc.) Age combined with additional socio-demographic & health information Location & other info for the many small, but growing populations of elderly and/or their families** **including elderly LGBT populations, who exist in large numbers but are not often identified in survey data

Thank you
