The value of Research Data Management (RDM)

Why is RDM a hot topic now? Three trends are coming together, leading to an acceleration of RDM practices 1) Computational: Faster, easier, cheaper, more computational methods of doing science Coming of age of analytics yield new layers of insight on same data 2) Funding bodies & institutions: Funding agencies driving data sharing mandates aiming to improve re-use of data and reproducibility of research Which is followed by institutions adopting data management policies and plans 3) Researchers: a new generation of researchers, more focused on data and data sharing “Research Data is a first class citizen”

Journal data policies are becoming the standard: TOP guidelines are being adopted everywhere

RDM adoption is growing fast CAGR: 2% CAGR: 46% Source: SciVal, data extracted on January 24, 2019 – CAGR = Compound Annual Growth Rate

The impact of RDM best practices – Netherlands Example Source: SciVal, data extracted on January 24, 2019

The impact of RDM best practices – Australia example Source: SciVal, data extracted on September, 2018

Supporting three data lifecycles The research life cycle depends heavily on two data life cycles: 1. Within a project, covering all active data in all domains 2. Within the world at large Taking the institutional lens, we can speak of the 3 interlocking data life cycles

Unlocking the full potential of research data Mendeley Data has been specifically designed to help utilize data to its fullest potential. Consisting of five modules, this open platform helps research institutions manage the entire lifecycle of research data and enables researchers to safely access and share information wherever they are. The benefits for researchers Prevent re-work: save time searching, collecting and sharing data Comply with funders' mandates Improve impact: increase data reuse The benefits for institutions Keep track of data inside and outside your institution Showcase research outputs Improve collaborations within/across institutions
