Paragraph 1 ___25 pts: One paragraph summarizing the book. Focus on the main events. Title and author’s name should be stated in opening sentence. A good summary has the who, what, when, and where of the story. You completed this for bell work. Who – children in a school on Venus What – the sun is coming out after being hidden for 7 years When – in the future Where – on Venus

Paragraph 1 In the short story, All Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury, the students on Venus are waiting to see the sun come out after 7 years of storms. What did you have? Everyone’s can be different, and that is okay! Now, let’s brain storm ideas that are the most important to the story’s plot.

Brainstorm Margot was sad because she missed the sun. The students were jealous because she had experienced the sun before. The students claimed that they did not believe Margot had seen the sun. They students locked Margot in the closet and forgot about her. The students regretted their actions.

It could look like this In the short story, All Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury, the students on Venus are waiting to see the sun come out after 7 years of storms. Margot, one of the students, has seen the sun as she lived previously on Earth. She misses the sun so much that she is depressed and withdrawn. The other students are filled with both jealousy and doubt. These emotions drive them to lock Margot in the closet, and she misses seeing the sun that will not come out again for 7 long years.

Paragraph 2 ___25pts: One paragraph describing two main characters. You must list a personality trait for each, AND show evidence of this personality trait. This must be a direct quote from the book and include the page number. There will be 2 quotes, one for each character. Most of us will select Margot as one of our characters. What character traits would you use to describe her?

Paragraph 2 Timid, introverted, depressed might have been some of your words Now, you will go back into the text and select a piece of text that supports this claim. Take a minute in your group to find an example.

Paragraph 2 Character 2- We will use William for this example. What words describe him?

Paragraph 2 You might have said mean, bully, angry, or rude. Now, you must go back into the text and find evidence to support your claim of William having this trait.

Remember, it must have 2 quotes! Two main characters in All Summer in a Day are Margot and William. Margot is depressed because she misses the sun so much. On page 71, it describes how Margot hates the rain so much that she doesn’t want to even take a shower. “ And once, a month ago, she refused to shower in the school shower-rooms, had clutched her hands to her ears and over her head, screaming the water mustn’t touch her head.” In contrast, William is an angry bully. He is driven by jealousy of Margot’s life experiences. This drives him to lock Margot in the closet so that she will miss the experience. It is described on page 72. “Hey, everyone, let’s put her in the closet before teacher comes!”

Paragraph 3 ___25pts: One paragraph identifying the main conflict of the book and explaining how each of the main characters responded to the conflict. What is the main conflict of our story and how does it unfold? Work in your groups to complete this.

It might look like this The main conflict in the story is between the children and Margot. They hate that she has experienced the sun while they have not. They are mean to her when she describes her memories with words and pictures. As the plot unfolds, they end up ganging up on her and locking her in the closet. Though in the end, they feel badly about their actions. Sadly, she has missed the experience that wanted, it can’t not be undone.
