An overview from Sylvain Côté HP-71B Compendium An overview from Sylvain Côté 2016-09-12

Description The purpose of this document is to gather and publish all the relevant information related to the HP-71B handheld computer with links to all the resources, including: manuals, ROM images, overlays, pamphlets, etc. 2016-09-12

History (part 1) Suggested in 2015 by Robert Prosperi and Dave Frederickson when we were creating the repository of the HP-71B ROM images for the FRAM71 Finding the items was easy, I already had 95%+ of them in my personal collection and already organized. The project really started in October 2015, near the end of the FRAM71 projects (repository, articles, etc) It took me a little less than two months (~80 hours) to create and publish the first version (2015-12-07) of the document, which was by the way, a single page article back then. 2016-09-12

History (part 2) During December 2015, I published several updates. I also reached several limits of the hpmuseum.org article forum system, including: too many pictures for an article, article too big, too many links, etc. The above limits force me to revise several times how the information was published and organized. Near the end of December, Dave asked for a PDF version, which I did using the web article format. He came back with some valid criticism. Dave and Robert being my beta testers and my first "customers", my goal was to make them happy, so I had to revise my strategy. 2016-09-12

History (part 3) After some testing, I decided to use the Apple Page software on OSX to create a completely new and separate document from the forum article. During the same time, the web article had become a two-part article and I was starting to reach the forum limits again. It took me another ~50 hours to create a better looking Page version of the document (published as PDF). Again, this forced me to revise the forum article version to match the look & feel of the PDF version. 2016-09-12

History (part 4) At that point I stopped counting the hours spent on this project. ;-) Between January 2016 and April 2016, three major versions were released to become what is the compendium today: a four-part article and a PDF file. There was another major version that was supposed to be published around June/July but personal life changed some priorities and had to be postponed. The current time frame for that version is now somewhere before the end of 2016. 2016-09-12

Availability The current version of the document is April, 30th 2016 Compendium update is announced on this page www.hpmuseum.org/forum/thread-5435.html The four-part article is available on this page www.hpmuseum.org/forum/thread-5286.html The PDF document is available on DropBox dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5323342/ hpmuseum/HP71B/DOC/HP-71B_COMPENDIUM.pdf 2016-09-12

The future ... My plan is to release two other compendium in the 2017/2018 time frame HP-75 Compendium HP-IL Compendium When ready, they will also be published in the Articles section of the hpmuseum.org web site There is also a personal web site with a dedicated HP handheld calculator & computer section planned in the same time frame 2016-09-12
