Presentation transcript:

(This will be the SPARK of WW 1) Nationalism (extreme pride in your nation) led to rivalries which created tension in Europe. Aa Imperialism: European rivals competed over territory and resources around the world. d Militarism: European nations start to “glorify” the military And war. An arms race begins in Europe. a Causes Of WW 1 The Alliance System: Nations joined alliances for protection Against their enemies. Nations agreed to back each other up “if something happened” (This caused it to be a WORLD War) 1914-1918 The Balkan Crisis: This region of Europe was a “powder keg” that could explode at any time. June 28th 1914: Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary is assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia by a Bosnian Serb. (This will be the SPARK of WW 1)

THE “SPARK” OF WW 1 The Balkan Crisis: Austria-Hungary controlled Bosnia but Bosnian Serbs and Serbia want it to be part of Serbia. On June 28th 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand is assassinated while in Sarajevo, Bosnia by a Bosnian Serb. By 1914, Alliances had divided Europe into two rival camps. Alliances will create a chain reaction which leads to other nations joining in, a WORLD war begins! Austria-Hungary blames Serbia for the assassination and will declare war.
