How to use the framework for chapter development: Chapter Board Activities How do we make our chapter better? When we take off our HR hats, place our chapter leader hats on, and then think about building a chapter, what first comes to mind? Is it about preparing and planning for activities and programs? Should it also be about developing a sustainable chapter leadership strategy that includes succession planning efforts? There is no doubt you and other association leaders have discussed as well as assessed the ways in which chapter leaders can formalize policies and procedures, maintain financial standing and improve chapter websites. In addition, you have likely considered ways that chapters ensure engagement and inclusion, as well as provide resources. Now think about those discussions in relation to how the learning framework can help with chapter development/leadership and chapter programming development. For example, how can certain framework competencies help in designing an overall chapter strategy? Or which competencies immediately came to mind as important ones to include in chapter event programming (ex. recruitment, project management, continuous improvement, team building, etc.)? Chapter Development: Using the CUPA-HR Learning Framework to Lead our Chapter

How will you use the learning framework?

Chapter Development Activity Which competencies are most important to our leadership of the chapter and why? How could we put framework competencies into practice this year in our leadership roles? How, for example, could we use the learning framework to fill a board vacancy? Activity As a board, share ways in which you have used, or could use, the learning framework to enhance how the chapter operates. We will focus on chapter programming in the next slide, but for now let’s focus on how we operate as a board and as leaders of CUPA-HR. Be honest with one another. If you haven’t thought about using the learning framework in this manner, share ideas regarding how it could be used for chapter development. Spend a few minutes discussing each question: Which competencies are most important to our leadership of the chapter and why? How can we put any of the framework competencies into practice this year in our leadership roles? How, for example, could we use the learning framework to fill a board vacancy?

Program Development How to use the framework for program development Let’s now focus on how we use the framework to help create event programming. Establishing a program’s purpose, goals and objectives is critical to effective program implementation and evaluation. Without a carefully considered purpose and goals, the program will lack a clear direction and eventually may find its existence called into question. Chapter leaders should develop realistic and achievable goals that reflect the chapter’s key objectives (why do we host learning events?) and member needs (for whom do we develop learning events?). Establishing reasonable goals and objectives will require planning and discussing with all chapter leaders the content and logistical planning. Planning also will help to ascertain what future improvements are achievable, given the program aims and resources. Program Development

Additional Notes Additional development notes Content planning examples (content to include and why) The national office’s primary content areas are leadership, public policy, research, and DEI. These four areas help to maintain alignment with the CUPA-HR strategic priorities and provide a starting point. From there, we focus on what members need to learn more about and how to apply concepts and tools on campus (ex. Leadership – Talent Management – Succession Planning – Talent Pipeline - Preparing Future Leaders). Determine what content is most relevant and timely. Determine who is the best speaker to present the content. The chapter leader toolkit on the CUPA-HR website has great easy-to-use resources to help you plan the content for your conference/event. Approaches to content planning you may recognize: My chapter solicits presenters and subject matter experts by conducting a call for proposals My chapter uses a call for proposals, but we also identify targeted content and reach out directly to content experts to ensure that this content is delivered during the conference/event. My chapter provides learning content to enable excellence and success for higher ed HR professionals and their institutions Logistics planning examples What is the anticipated revenue? What are the anticipated expenses? The board should carefully consider both of these questions to ensure that revenue will exceed expenses with some small return to reserves. Where will you host the event? If you hold your events at an institution, do you have the conference host lead the planning committee or engaged in the planning process? Who (content leader) will do what? The chapter leader toolkit on the CUPA-HR website has checklists and other very easy-to-use resources to help you plan and implement your event. Additional Notes
