RENAISSANCE ART Art from the preceding Medieval era: reflection of religious life, emphasis on after life; influenced by ever-growing Christian Church Renaissance art became more focused on nature and mankind reflection of the revival of classical art forms Focus on the natural human form E.g., Donatello and Michelangelo's David; Idealized body – beautiful, muscular, pure More of a civic meaning, rather than religious representation of ideal man, ideal ruler Modeled after Greek statues of gods

Artists at this time achieved a higher degree of respectability (and wealth) commissioned by the Church and the wealthy The focus on mankind meant the topics of artistic impression could focus on families or saints; Many themes and ideas were from the classical Roman or Greek literature and mythology; Many works were meant to inspire civic duty of the citizen represent the values of the city-state; Many kept the religious theme as they demonstrated the special relationship between God and man; RENAISSANCE ARTISTS Raphael Michelangelo Caravaggio
