1 Essential Question: What was the Renaissance and how did it start?

2 Background When the Mongols took over China they reopened the Silk Road. This allowed Europe to trade with China. Marco Polo traveled and brought back many ideas and items.

3 Background The printing press was invented by Johannes Gutenberg around 1440 Allowed copies to be made easily. Spread reading to the common people. The Church lost control of knowledge.

4 Background Humanism A philosophy that emphasizes the worth and potential of all individuals and tries to balance religious faith with belief in the power of the human mind.

6 Why Italy? Started in Florence Italy and spread northward.
Location, Location, Location. Along the seas meant they had lots of travelers. Roads left over from the Romans.

7 Why Italy? Italy was one of the most urbanized area of Europe.
Many cities in Italy stood at the ruins of Ancient Roman buildings. People were inspired in what man was capable of creating.

8 Why Italy? Italy was divided into smaller city states.
Naples controlled the north Florence and Papal States the center. Genoese and Milanese controlled the south.

10 Why Italy? Money and Art went hand in hand.
Artists depended on patrons to buy art. Patrons needed Art to show off their status. Wealth emerged in Italy in 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries. Expanding trade and increased flow of luxuries.

12 MIND MELD Put a star next to what you believe are the three most important facts in the previous section. Then compare answers with your shoulder partner and agree on one most important fact. Mind Meld aka Consensus Conclusions: Generate a list of the 5 most important facts. Then, with a partner (or in group of four) generate a list that you all agree upon. *Would easily work with 3 facts and then agreeing upon one most important. 12

13 The Medici A family of bankers that ruled Florence.
They paid many artists. Without them the Renaissance may not have happened. But it was not all good.

14 Lorenzo di Medici’s Became leader of Florence at the age of 20 after his father died. Patron (supporter) of Da Vinci and Michelangelo. Rival families saw him as weak and tried to kill him.

15 Art Their were many differences in art throughout time.
Classical Art-500 B.C.E. through 500 C.E. Artists valued balance and harmony Figures were lifelike but often idealized. They often didn’t have clothes on. Looked active and motion was believable. Faces were calm with no emotion. Little background in paintings.

16 Art Medieval Art- 500-1300. Most was religious.
Important figures were larger than those around them. Little movement and no feeling. Backgrounds mostly one color.

17 Art Showed religious and non-religious scenes.
Renaissance Art Perspective was used in Renaissance art. Perspective-the appearance of distance or depth on a flat surface as in a painting. Showed religious and non-religious scenes.

18 Art Renaissance Art-1300-1600. Bodies were active and showed motion.
Figures were lifelike and 3 dimensional. Showed people doing everyday tasks. Paintings were symmetrical Full backgrounds showed perspective.
