Chalk and Talk

Chalk and Talk Advantages Delivery of lecture by subject matter expert. Subject matter is represented more accurately and effectively. It is useful for covering underlying concepts and principles. Large information can be communicated to a heterogeneous group. Challenges The student becomes a dependent learner. More teacher centric and less student centric. Establishes a “tell me” mind set in the learner. Can lead to learner information overload.

Story telling mode/Case study

Story telling/Case based Advantages Mixed-Mostly student centric. Helps to increase higher order thinking & reasoning skills (application, synthesis, evaluation). Helps participants explore pre existing knowledge. Challenges Ensuring participation from all can be a challenge. It can be time consuming.

Discussion mode Advantages Highly Student Centric. It is designed from students point of view. Guides learners to higher level of thinking and enquiry. It promotes tolerance with understanding. Challenges Relies on learning preparation and willingness to participate. Can lead to a dominant few controlling the floor. Can potentially degenerate into off task and social conversations.

Simulation centric Advantages Highly Student Centric. It is an active learning technique Increases curiosity of students & strengthens imagination with facts. Challenges Limits the number of people who can access the learning at the same time. Can create scheduling and logistics problems.

Role play Advantages Actively involves participants. Develops problem solving and verbal expression skills. Provides teacher with immediate feedback about learners understanding. Challenges Can create embarrassment and even resistance. Can be unpredictable in terms of outcomes. Depends heavily on learners ability of imagination and willingness to participate.

Team teaching-collaborative mode Advantages Highly student centric. Active and involved learning. Intense stimulating debates. Highly interactive class room sessions. Challenges Joint lectures is a new concept. Students must be well connected and aligned with each other for effective results. Scheduling and logistics would pose as a challenge.

Multimedia based Advantages Highly Student centric Ensures Student engagement Increases enthusiasm of the learner Memory retention is more Challenges The multimedia tools are expensive Require continuous expert maintenance Trained staff is required to handle malfunctions and technical difficults

Social media driven Advantages Motivate and engage the student. It reinforces and changes opinion. Teacher and Learner centric Challenges It cannot replace a teacher. It can be used in combination with another teaching methodology.

Game learning Advantages Actively involves the learner. Provides a challenge that can lead to confidence in knowing. Promotes team learning and collaborative skills. Challenges Can create in group/out group feelings. May de-motivate those who are not competitive by nature.

It is a continuous process….
