Your Roadmap to Success Strategic Planning Your Roadmap to Success

Getting to Know You Questions Name Place of work What you do How long have you been an RISHP volunteer Why do you volunteer Fun fact

A strategic plan serves as an organizational roadmap A strategic plan serves as an organizational roadmap. A road map gives you the best route to your destination, alerting you of possible dangers and providing alternate roads should you veer off course. Without it, you can end up somewhere you don’t want to be.

Why a Strategic Plan? A plan guides the board, committees and staff Informs members what they can expect from the organization Gets organization leaders on the same page through consensus to achieve mission Solves problems and reveals opportunities Serves as a reality check: where are we now? Where are we going? Builds teamwork among board and staff

What is a Strategic Plan? A strategic plan serves as an organizational roadmap Especially important to organizations where volunteers frequently transitions A plan guides the board, committees and staff Informs members what they can expect from the organization

Reasons for Strategic Planning Gets organization leaders on the same page through consensus To achieve mission Solves problems and reveals opportunities Serves as a reality check: where are we now? Where are we going? Builds teamwork among board and staff

Precautions To make your plan a success, organizations should avoid the following: Too many goals: beyond the capacity of the organization Too tactical: simply a “to-do list” Unrealistic goals Short term (1 year) rather than visionary (3 to 5 years) Lack of performance measures Lack of buy-in and support by members, committees, allies and staff Never implemented

Strategic Planning Ground Rules Maintain focus by limiting digital distractions Encourage frank discussion, new ideas and diverse opinions Go for altitude: Take a 50,000-ft approach. Avoid getting in the weeds Don’t get stuck reminiscing about the “good old days” Avoid games Agree on terminology Discourage walk-ins or drop outs

Elements of the Strategic Plan Brand Platform (Mission, Vision and Values) SWOT Analysis Goal Setting (S.M.A.R.T.) Strategies Performance Measures Implementation

Brand platform Elements of the Strategic Plan

Brand Platform Mission Statement A clear, concise, easy to remember statement of purpose. Answers basic questions about the organization: who, what, why, for whom, where? Focuses on purpose/outcomes, not methods (to improve quality of life for people experiencing mental illness, not to provide counseling) Helps to position your organization and communicate your “value-add” to others

ASHP Mission Statement The mission of pharmacists is to help people achieve optimal health outcomes. ASHP helps its members achieve this mission by advocating and supporting the professional practice of pharmacists in hospitals, health systems, ambulatory care clinics, and other settings spanning the full spectrum of medication use. ASHP serves its members as their collective voice on issues related to medication use and public health.

Brand Platform Vision Statement An inspiring statement answering: "What do we want to be in the long term if we had unlimited resources?” Think of the vision statement as an image of the organization if it fully carries out its mission and strategic plan A short, inspirational statement of what the world will be like when you have achieved your mission

ASHP Vision Statement ASHP’s vision is that medication use will be optimal, safe, and effective for all people all of the time.

Brand Platform Values Statement Core values are consistent with the mission, informing others of the organization’s guiding principles maintained by board and staff. It is better to adopt a values statement than to insert values into the mission or bylaws.

Sample Value Statement Our work will be guided and informed by our beliefs and commitments to: Inclusiveness - we respect people, value diversity and are committed to equality. Participation - we value and recognize the contributions of volunteers within organizations and communities Quality - we strive for excellence through continuous improvement Openness - we are committed to a culture of teamwork and collaboration

Goals, objectives and tasks Elements of the Strategic Plan

Goals Objectives Tasks

SMART GOALS

Elements of the Strategic Plan Make sure all goals are: Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Timely

Strategies What tactics will you use to achieve your goals? For example, how will your organization expand student involvement or build inter-discipline coalitions?

Next Steps You’ve done the hard work, building the foundation. But the next steps you take are equally critical – following through. Many organizations find it beneficial to use a tracking document, which lists the goals, strategies, responsible persons, deadlines and budget guidelines. The board should review and evaluate the plan on a regular basis, making modifications or adjustments when needed.

Thank you!
