idea management process overview All digital platforms that capture ideas need to have a systematic Idea Management Process to facilitate their development and turn them into solutions. That Idea Management Process needs to be transparent, inclusive and driven from the top to develop a company-wide culture of innovation. Start
idea management process stage one ASK OPEN A CHANNEL FOR INPUT Whether it is improving product offerings, services or internal processes to boost efficiency, the first step is to create a channel for input around specific business challenges. The most successful companies enhance their capability to co-op with customers, employees and sometimes both by using smart digital tools. This allows for the collective intelligence of a connected network of people to work seamlessly together around a specific challenge. 02
idea management process stage two SHARE ENGAGE EMPLOYEES TO CONTRIBUTE TO IDEAS Involving employees in the process of ideation is nothing new. However, creating the framework to work in a transparent and inclusive manner, through a company’s existing digital workplace, is both ambitious and exciting. This type of engagement framework creates the potential to find the best solutions through a connected network. NOTE To create a culture of innovation that impacts the foundation of an organisation, every single employee must have the opportunity to participate. 01 03
idea management process stage three RANK EVALUATE IDEAS PROVIDING FEEDBACK When ranking ideas, involve your employees in the evaluation process. This will benefit your organisation by: Demonstrating that you value your employee knowledge and competence, increasing their interest and engagement in ideation Providing valuable and up-to-date insights as to why the idea will see a valid ROI Exhibiting a transparent and inclusive culture, thereby encouraging involvement in future programs 02 04
idea management process stage four SELECT IDENTIFY IDEAS TO MOVE FORWARD WITH When selecting ideas, assess timing, market conditions, ROI, cost to implement, ownership etc… into the decision-making process. Whichever ideas are selected, encourage the involvement of the idea owner in the planning and implementation phases. This will demonstrate a true innovation culture and send ripples of appreciation through an organisation. NOTE Transparency and inclusivity are key attributes to encourage employee engagement in any opt-in program. 03 05
idea management process stage five PLAN OUTLINE THE PROCESS TO DELIVER Every idea selected needs a Business Sponsor to approve it, Stakeholders to drive it, a Project Leader to manage it, and a team to deliver it. The project team generally would come from different groups, functions and lines of business to ensure success. However, including volunteers from those that showed a passion for the original idea will bring some continuity to the idea management process. Good planning is essential in reducing risks, avoiding missing deadlines and delivering the right solution. 04 06
idea management process stage six DO EXECUTE AND DELIVER SOLUTION Once all the planning is in place, and a project team established, it is time to deliver. Communicating progress to the wider employee audience is essential but often ignored. Providing regular updates will go a long way to showing employees the willingness for inclusivity and encourage future involvement in the idea management process. Once an idea has been delivered, celebrate it. This will send out a positive cultural message and potentially influence others to get involved in ideation. 05
