2 Overview: Financial data and analytics
Top challenges and how Gartner can help To support finance leaders in their efforts to improve financial data and analytics, our research will address the following common client questions: How can we manage financial data (e.g., structure, definition, attributes) so it can be more easily aligned with other types of data (e.g., customer, marketing, operational performance)? How can management reports advance decision makers’ understanding of performance and associated actions? How do we identify opportunities for advanced analytics and scale them across the organization? The topics we cover include: Financial data management: Streamline financial information, structure data and standardize data definitions to create a high-quality data environment that ensures information integrity while enabling faster and more impactful analysis of business problems. Finance analytics: Generate insights derived from the application of specialized and semiautonomous (i.e., machine-driven) analytic methods to create more impactful analysis for business decision makers. Metrics and management reporting: Build effective dashboards and internal reports that balance historical views of performance with real-time and forward-looking KPIs to improve performance management.

3 Finance Analytics

4 Challenges with delivering finance analytics
1 2 3 Finance’s analytics team and data assets are not organized for business impact Finance teams lack the skills and technologies needed for advanced analytics Finance struggles to build a business case for advanced analytic capabilities Finance lacks clear processes to collect, store, maintain and extract raw data for analytic work. Finance rarely have a mandate to make improvements to data assets. As a result, the business doesn’t see itself in finance’s data and thus lacks the confidence to act on finance’s information. Analytics teams often lack centralized leadership and organization. Finance struggles to synthesize its analysis with that of other functional analytics groups. Finance leaders struggle to articulate and develop the skills required to create and deliver insightful analysis in finance. Finance struggles to select and implement analytic technologies that will deliver the right capabilities for the organization. Analytic skills are expensive to hire and hard to train, leaving most teams to rely on a few all-star finance staff to conduct analysis. Analytics leaders struggle to explain the business impact of analytics investments. Advanced analytics is an emerging field, which makes it difficult to understand which analytics projects are worthwhile investments. Finance struggles to scale successful analytic pilots across the business.
